A fox head is a triangle. Not a circle with a snout added, which is how most people start it and why most people's foxes come out looking like a dog. Start from the triangle and the fox is already there in the silhouette before you have drawn a single feature.
The ears are big and they are triangles too, which means the whole top half of this drawing is three triangles of different sizes.

Draw a wide triangle, point down. This is the whole head.

Draw a line across the triangle about a third of the way down. Eyes go on it.

Two big triangle ears on top, leaning slightly outward.

This is a lesson about committing to a silhouette before adding detail, which is the habit that separates drawings that read clearly from drawings that are full of careful marks and still look muddy.
It also drills line confidence: the long sides of the head triangle want to be single strokes. Sketching them in short nervous passes is the most common thing that makes a beginner's drawing look beginner.

Whatever is nearest. If you are working on paper, keep the first triangle light - you will draw over most of it.

If your fox reads as a dog, the snout is too short and too round. Foxes are pointier than you think and the point is lower than you think.
Big ears are correct. When it looks like you have gone too far with the ears, you are probably about right.
Draw the long sides of the head in one stroke each. If you find yourself sketching them in five or six short passes, you will get a furry, uncertain edge that no amount of later detail will fix. Rest your hand, look at where the line is going to end, and move.
The eyes are the one place to slow down. Fox eyes are almond-shaped and they tilt down toward the nose - two symmetrical circles will read as a cartoon dog immediately. Getting the tilt right does more for the likeness than every fur mark in the last step combined.

- The snout is too short or too round. A fox snout is a long narrow triangle, and the tip sits lower than feels natural.
- How big should the ears be?
- Bigger than you think. Roughly as tall as the distance from the eyes to the chin.
- Should I draw the whole triangle first?
- Yes. Silhouette first, features second. It is the whole point of this lesson.
- Do I have to do the fur marks?
- No. The fox is finished and recognisable without them - the finish-early button gives you exactly that version.
- Can I do this with a mouse?
- Yes. Long straight-ish strokes are actually easier with a mouse than short fiddly ones.
- What colour is a fox, if I want to colour it in?
- Orange body, white chin and chest, dark legs and ear tips. The white patch is what makes it read as a fox rather than a dog.
- My triangle is not symmetrical.
- Neither is a real fox. Carry on.
- Is there a harder version?
- Draw it again with the guide turned off. That is the harder version and it is the one that teaches you something.
