Iedereen trekt de bovenkant van een mok als een platte ovaal en iedereen's mok komt er verkeerd uit. De regel die het repareert is eenvoudig: hoe verder de opening is van je oog niveau, hoe ronder het lijkt. Niveau met je ogen is het bijna een rechte lijn; op de vloer onder je is het bijna een cirkel. Haal dat ene idee en je hebt niet geleerd om een mok te tekenen - je hebt geleerd om wielen, blikken, platen, flessen, hoeden en ogen te tekenen, die allemaal hetzelfde probleem zijn op verschillende groottes.

Stap 1
Beslis je oogniveau en markeer het.
Everything about the ellipses follows from this. If the mug is below your eye level you will see into it; if it is level you will not. Make the decision consciously now rather than letting it drift halfway through the drawing.
Kijk uit. Not deciding, then drawing a rim that contradicts the base.

Stap 2
Teken de rand als één ellips, in één enkele snelle beweging.
Go round three or four times without stopping and keep the best pass. Speed is what makes an ellipse smooth - drawn slowly it comes out lumpy on one side every single time, because your hand cannot hold a curve at low speed.
Kijk uit. Building it out of short careful arcs.
Ophalen It should be symmetrical about its own long axis.

Stap 3
Trek de twee kanten recht naar beneden, wat inconsistent.
Start exactly at the ends of the ellipse's long axis. A slight taper inward looks more natural than perfectly parallel sides, and it is what most real mugs do.
Kijk uit. Starting the sides inside or outside the rim, which leaves a visible step.
Ophalen Each side should begin exactly at the widest point of the rim.

The base is further from your eye level than the rim, so it is rounder. Same width, more curve. Getting this relationship right is the difference between a mug that sits on the table and one that appears to be sliding off it.

Voeg een tweede curve toe net binnen de rand.
This thin band is the thickness of the ceramic, and it is what makes the top read as an opening rather than a painted disc. One stroke, following the rim's curve.
Kijk uit. Drawing it parallel all the way round instead of following the ellipse.
Ophalen There should be a visible band between the two curves at the front.

Teken de buitenste curve van het handvat.
Start just below the rim and end about two-thirds of the way down the side. Both ends must touch the mug - a handle that floats beside the body is the most common error here and it is instantly visible.

Geef de handgreep dikte met een tweede curve binnen.
A handle is a strap, not a wire. The inner curve runs parallel to the outer one and meets the mug slightly closer in at both ends. This is a small change that makes a large difference to how solid the mug looks.
Kijk uit. Drawing the handle as a single line.
Ophalen There should be a visible gap between the two handle curves.

Stap 8
Markeer waar het licht vandaan komt.
Pick a side and commit. A cylinder shades differently from a sphere - the darkest band sits just inside the edge on the shadow side, not at the very edge, because light bounces back up off the table onto the rim.
Kijk uit. Shading the very edge darkest, which makes the mug look flat.
Ophalen You should be able to say which side is lit.

Work in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth. Scrubbing gives an even grey, which is exactly the thing that makes a drawing look flat, so lay the strokes the same way and build the darkness in passes.
Kijk uit. Being too timid. Beginners routinely stop two or three steps short of dark enough.
Ophalen The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone, not slightly.

Light bouncing off the table catches the very edge of a cylinder, so the darkest band sits slightly INSIDE the outline. Leaving that thin lighter strip is what makes the mug read as round rather than as a shaded rectangle.
Kijk uit. Running the shading right up to the outline.
Ophalen There should be a thin lighter line between your shading and the edge.

Stap 11

The cast shadow is darkest where it touches the mug and softens as it moves away. It also anchors the object to a surface - without it the mug floats, however well you have shaded it.
Kijk uit. Drawing it as an even grey blob detached from the object.
Ophalen It should touch the object and be darkest at that contact point.

Stap 12
Ga over de lijnen die je wilt houden, en verlies de gidsen.
This is the step that turns a construction drawing into a finished one, and it is the one most people skip. Press harder on the outline and the features; leave the small stuff light. That difference in weight is what makes a drawing look deliberate rather than traced, and it costs thirty seconds.
Kijk uit. Going over everything at the same weight, which flattens the drawing back out.
Ophalen The outline should be clearly darker than the smallest details.

Dezelfde tekening met elke gids gewist en alleen de lijnen die je bedoelde te houden, op het gewicht dat je bedoelde ze te zijn. Als de uwe nog steeds centrale lijnen en blokkeer-in vormen in het, dit is de stap die je nog niet hebt gedaan - en het duurt ongeveer dertig seconden.

Dit is de ellips les, en een ellips is echt een les over het tekenen wat er voor je staat in plaats van wat je weet. Je weet dat de rand is een cirkel. Het ziet er niet uit als een van hier, en de tekening moet zeggen hoe het eruit ziet. Het boort ook lijn vertrouwen hard: een ellips getrokken in een toegewijde beweging ziet er goed uit, en dezelfde ellips samengesteld uit twaalf zorgvuldige slagen ziet er verkeerd uit zelfs als het nauwkeuriger is.

Wat je nodig hebt.
Een potlood en een echte mok op het bureau voor je. Deze les is enorm makkelijker met iets om naar te kijken, want het hele punt is tekenen hoe een ellips eruit ziet in plaats van wat je een cirkel kent.
Als het misgaat.
Als de ellips wiebelt, dan teken je hem langzaam. Ga meerdere malen rond in één snelle continue beweging en houd de beste pas - een hand kan geen gladde bocht vasthouden bij lage snelheid. Als de mok er uitziet alsof hij omdraait, zijn de twee ellips niet het eens. De onderste is altijd iets ronder dan de bovenkant, nooit vlakter. Teken de hele bovenste ellips inclusief de achterste helft die je niet kunt zien, dan beslissen wat te wissen. Teken alleen de zichtbare boog geeft je een rand die niet sluit.

Vragen die mensen stellen
- Waarom zien mijn ellipsen er wiebelig uit?
- Je tekent ze langzaam. Ga meerdere keren rond in een snelle continue beweging, dan houd de beste pas.
- Hoe rond moet de top van de mok zijn?
- Het hangt volledig af van je oogniveau. Kijk naar een echte mok: op ooghoogte is de rand bijna een lijn, van bovenaf is het bijna een cirkel.
- Waarom lijkt mijn mok op een val?
- De onderste ellips is het niet eens met de bovenkant. De onderkant is altijd iets ronder, en beide moeten dezelfde breedte hebben.
- Waar gaat de hendel heen?
- Net onder de rand beginnend en eindigend rond tweederde naar beneden, aan de zijkant bevestigd in plaats van drijvend ernaast.
- Moet ik de binnenkant van de mok tekenen?
- Een tweede bocht in de rand. Die dunne band is wat het als een opening in plaats van een schijf laat lezen.
- Moeten de zijkanten recht zijn?
- Een lichte taper lijkt natuurlijker dan perfect parallel, en het is wat de meeste echte mokken eigenlijk doen.
- Is dit nuttig voor iets anders?
- Wielen, blikken, borden, hoeden, flessen en ogen zijn allemaal dezelfde vaardigheid.
- Wat moet ik hierna tekenen?
