Alla drar toppen av en mugg som en platt oval och allas mugg kommer ut fel. Regeln som fixar det är enkel: ju längre öppningen är från ögonnivån, den rundare den ser ut. Nivå med ögonen är det nästan en rak linje; på golvet nedanför dig är det nästan en cirkel. Få den en idé och du har inte lärt dig att rita en mugg - du har lärt dig att rita hjul, burkar, plattor, flaskor, hattar och ögon, som alla är samma problem i olika storlekar.

Steg 1
Bestäm ögonhöjden och markera den.
Everything about the ellipses follows from this. If the mug is below your eye level you will see into it; if it is level you will not. Make the decision consciously now rather than letting it drift halfway through the drawing.

Steg 2

Go round three or four times without stopping and keep the best pass. Speed is what makes an ellipse smooth - drawn slowly it comes out lumpy on one side every single time, because your hand cannot hold a curve at low speed.

Start exactly at the ends of the ellipse's long axis. A slight taper inward looks more natural than perfectly parallel sides, and it is what most real mugs do.

The base is further from your eye level than the rim, so it is rounder. Same width, more curve. Getting this relationship right is the difference between a mug that sits on the table and one that appears to be sliding off it.

Lägg till en andra kurva precis innanför kanten.
This thin band is the thickness of the ceramic, and it is what makes the top read as an opening rather than a painted disc. One stroke, following the rim's curve.
Se upp Drawing it parallel all the way round instead of following the ellipse.
Kontrollera There should be a visible band between the two curves at the front.

Steg 6
Dra den yttre kurvan på handtaget.
Start just below the rim and end about two-thirds of the way down the side. Both ends must touch the mug - a handle that floats beside the body is the most common error here and it is instantly visible.

Ge handtagets tjocklek med en andra kurva inuti.
A handle is a strap, not a wire. The inner curve runs parallel to the outer one and meets the mug slightly closer in at both ends. This is a small change that makes a large difference to how solid the mug looks.

Pick a side and commit. A cylinder shades differently from a sphere - the darkest band sits just inside the edge on the shadow side, not at the very edge, because light bounces back up off the table onto the rim.

Work in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth. Scrubbing gives an even grey, which is exactly the thing that makes a drawing look flat, so lay the strokes the same way and build the darkness in passes.
Se upp Being too timid. Beginners routinely stop two or three steps short of dark enough.
Kontrollera The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone, not slightly.

Lägg till en lättare remsa precis vid skuggsidan.
Light bouncing off the table catches the very edge of a cylinder, so the darkest band sits slightly INSIDE the outline. Leaving that thin lighter strip is what makes the mug read as round rather than as a shaded rectangle.

Kontrollera There should be a thin lighter line between your shading and the edge.

Steg 11

The cast shadow is darkest where it touches the mug and softens as it moves away. It also anchors the object to a surface - without it the mug floats, however well you have shaded it.
Se upp Drawing it as an even grey blob detached from the object.

This is the step that turns a construction drawing into a finished one, and it is the one most people skip. Press harder on the outline and the features; leave the small stuff light. That difference in weight is what makes a drawing look deliberate rather than traced, and it costs thirty seconds.
Se upp Going over everything at the same weight, which flattens the drawing back out.
Kontrollera The outline should be clearly darker than the smallest details.

Vad den här lär dig
Detta är ellipslektionen, och en ellips är verkligen en lektion om att rita vad som finns framför dig istället för vad du vet. Du vet att fälgen är en cirkel. Det ser inte ut som en härifrån, och ritningen måste säga hur det ser ut. Den borrar också linjekonfidens hårt: en ellips som dras i en engagerad rörelse ser rätt, och samma ellips som är monterad från tolv försiktiga drag ser fel även när det är mer exakt.

En penna och en riktig mugg på skrivbordet framför dig. Denna lektion är enormt lättare med något att titta på, eftersom hela poängen är att rita hur en ellips ser ut snarare än vad du vet en cirkel att vara.
Om det går fel
Om ellipsen är vibblig, ritar du den långsamt. Gå runt flera gånger i en snabb kontinuerlig rörelse och håll det bästa passet - en hand kan inte hålla en jämn kurva i låg hastighet. Om muggen ser ut som den tippas över, de två ellipserna inte. Den nedre en är alltid något rundare än toppen, aldrig smickrande. Rita hela övre ellipsen inklusive den bakre halvan du inte kan se, sedan bestämma vad du ska radera. Ritning bara den synliga bågen ger dig en fälg som inte stängs.

Frågor folk frågar
- Varför ser mina ellipser vinkla ut?
- Du ritar dem långsamt. Gå runt flera gånger i en snabb kontinuerlig rörelse, sedan hålla den bästa pass.
- Hur runt ska muggen vara?
- Det beror helt på din ögonnivå. Titta på en riktig mugg: på ögonhöjd är kanten nästan en linje, från ovan är det nästan en cirkel.
- Varför ser min mugg ut som om den faller över?
- Nedersta ellipsen är inte överens med toppen. Nedre delen är alltid något rundare och båda måste vara lika breda.
- Vart tar handtaget vägen?
- Börjar strax under fälgen och slutar runt två tredjedelar ner, fäst vid sidan snarare än flyter bredvid den.
- Måste jag rita insidan av muggen?
- Bara en andra kurva inuti kanten. Det tunna bandet är det som gör att det läser som en öppning snarare än en skiva.
- Ska sidorna vara raka?
- En lätt tapperhet ser mer naturlig ut än perfekt parallell, och det är vad de flesta riktiga muggar faktiskt gör.
- Är det användbart för något annat?
- Hjul, burkar, tallrikar, hattar, flaskor och ögon är samma skicklighet.
- Vad ska jag rita efter det här?
- Boken. Boxar och cylindrar tillsammans täcker de flesta konstgjorda föremål du någonsin kommer att vilja rita.
