Begin with a circle around the whole flower.

The circle should be the size you want the finished head.

A cherry blossom is five petals, and each one has a notch: the tip of every petal is dented in the middle, as if pinched, and that one detail is the entire identification. The flower grows straight off a dark woody twig with no green stem at all - the second fact everyone misses.

Like every flower here, it is built from the centre outward - core first, petals negotiating around it, stem from behind the head.

Begin with a circle around the whole flower.

The circle sets the finished size and stops the petals creeping outward as you add them - the commonest way a flower drawing ends up twice its intended size. Keep it light; it comes off at the end.

Skipping the circle and letting the petals sprawl.

The circle should be the size you want the finished head.

    Add the centre circle.

Everything radiates from the centre, so it goes down first, and every later petal is judged against it. Slightly off-centre reads more naturally than dead middle - real flowers are rarely symmetrical.

Starting with petals and fitting a centre in afterwards.

The centre should sit within the guide circle, roughly middle.

Draw the first group of petals.

Vary them as you go: a couple wider, one shorter, one overlapping its neighbour, and none exactly opposite another. Identical petals arranged evenly around a circle read as a printed logo, never as a flower.

Making every petal the same width and length.

No two adjacent petals should match exactly.

Draw the rest of the petals.

The second half has to negotiate with the first - some petals now tuck BEHIND ones already drawn. That overlap is what gives the head depth.

Squeezing the remaining petals to fit without overlap.

At least two petals should pass behind others.

Shade the centre of the flower.

The centre is the darkest part of almost every flower - it is effectively a hole into shadow, and the eye reads depth from it. Commit to it now so the values around it have something to key against.

A pale centre, which makes the head look flat.

The centre should be darker than any petal.

    Draw the stalk.

From behind the head, never from its bottom edge, and with a slight curve - a dead-straight stem reads as wire. It is thicker than you expect near the head.

A ruler-straight stem meeting the head's outline.

The stem should vanish behind a petal.

Add the leaves, no two the same.

Different heights, different sizes, never opposite each other in a matched pair, and each angled its own way off the stem. Leaves are the place where flower drawings go symmetrical and die.

Two matched leaves at the same height, like a logo.

The two leaves should differ in height and size.

    Suggest the petal surface.

A few veins on the nearest petals only, each following its petal's curve from base to tip. Texture on every petal flattens the head; texture on the near ones pulls them forward.

Veining every petal equally.

The far petals should stay clean.

    Add tone under the petals.

Each petal casts a small shadow on the one behind it. Those little wedges of dark are what separate the layers - without them the petals dissolve into one shape.

Shading whole petals instead of the overlaps.

You should be able to tell which petal is in front.

Put the cherry blossom features in.

Whatever identifies the species goes on now, and only now - detail added before the structure works just gets erased along with the structure. Put it where it matters most and then stop early.

Leading with the identifying detail before the form works.

The flower should read as its species at arm's length.

Make the centre the darkest point.

Push the centre darker than feels safe, in two or three passes rather than one heavy scrub. Beginners stop two steps short of dark enough, and the centre is the one place you can commit without risk.

Timid values in the middle.

Squint: the centre should read first.

Firm the keepers and clear the guide circle.

Weight the outer petal edges and the stem, keep veins light, and erase the guide circle completely - any surviving arc of it reads as a halo hanging behind the finished flower.

Leaving the construction circle visible.

No arc of the guide circle should survive.

The finished drawing of a cherry blossom with the construction lines erased

The skill underneath is working from the centre outward, which is how every radial subject stays under control instead of sprawling.

The blossom is precision at small scale: five petals, one notch each, a handful of stamen lines. Nothing hides a wobble, which makes it the radial family's line-quality test the way the swan is the bird family's.

Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.

If it looks like a generic five-petal flower, the notches are missing: dent the tip of every petal inward, once, shallowly.

If the colour logic is off, remember there is no green: blossom attaches to dark bark by a short reddish stem, and drawing a leafy green stalk breaks the branch.

If it looks pasted on, tuck it: real blossom sits in clusters, so even a single flower should overlap its twig, with one bud beside it.

How do I draw cherry blossom petals?
Five per flower, each with a single shallow notch dented into its tip. The notch is the species - without it you have drawn a generic flower.
Does a cherry blossom have a stem?
No green one. Each flower hangs off dark woody bark by a short reddish stalk, usually in a cluster with a bud or two.
How do I draw the middle of a cherry blossom?
A loose cluster of thin stamen lines with a dot on each tip, kept inside the middle third. Precision matters more than quantity - five lines read perfectly.
Can I draw a cherry blossom on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - every step works on paper, and there is a printable step sheet with the construction on one page and the finished sketch on the other. Photograph the result and it can be measured exactly like a canvas drawing.
How do I start drawing a cherry blossom?
A light circle the size of the finished head, then the centre, then petals - never petals first, or the head sprawls to twice its intended size.
How many petals should a cherry blossom have?
Fewer than you think, varied in size, with some overlapping. Count on a reference if you have one rather than guessing - suggestion beats census on every flower you will ever draw.
Why does my cherry blossom look like a cartoon flower?
The petals are identical and evenly spaced. Vary the widths, let petals overlap, and push the centre darker than feels safe.
Can a beginner draw a cherry blossom?
Yes - the centre-outward construction keeps the head under control at every stage, and even a rough version still reads because the structure is right.
Where does the stem join a cherry blossom?
Behind the head, disappearing behind a petal, with a slight curve along its whole length - never butted straight against the outline, which reads as stuck on.
