关于此绘图

A dolphin is one continuous curve pretending to be an animal. Nose to tail, the top line is a single unbroken sweep, and the beak - the bottle nose - is a short cylinder that grows out of the head with a visible crease where the melon of the forehead meets it.

Underneath, this is an oval and a tail like every swimmer on the site; the species is in the fins, the mouth and the markings.

一步

  1. 步 1

    Begin with the body shape.

One long oval, drawn fast. Fish bodies are smooth in a way hands are bad at producing slowly, so go round the shape in one continuous motion and keep the best pass.

小心 A lumpy body built from careful short strokes.

检查支票 The body should be symmetrical about its long axis.

  2. 步 2

Attach the tail to the end of the body.

The tail is bigger than you think - often a third of the body's length. An undersized tail is the single thing that makes a drawn fish read as a leaf.

小心 A small tail tucked against the body.

检查支票 The tail should be about a third of the body length.

  3. 步 3

    Draw the gill cover.

One curve, following the round of the head, roughly a fifth of the way along. It separates head from body and does more work than any other single line on the fish.

小心 A straight gill line, which flattens the head.

检查支票 The gill curve should bow the same way as the nose.

  4. 步 4

Place the eye, high and forward.

High and forward - roughly where the gill curve meets the top third. Round, dark centre, one highlight. Too low or too far back and the fish stops looking alert.

小心 Centring the eye in the head.

检查支票 The eye should sit above the body's midline.

  5. 步 5

    Mark the mouth.

The mouth sits at the very front, lower than the eye, and it is smaller than instinct says. A short curve is enough - an open grin turns the fish into a cartoon.

    小心 A large smiling mouth.

检查支票 The mouth should be below and forward of the eye.

  6. 步 6

Add the dorsal fin over the back.

Start the fin lines INSIDE the body so they cross the outline. That overlap is what attaches the fin - drawn outside the line it floats like a flag.

小心 A fin sitting on the outline without crossing it.

检查支票 Fin lines should visibly cross the body outline.

  7. 步 7

Add the bottom fin to match.

Compare it to the top fin, not to your idea of a fin: position, rake and size all read against the one you already drew.

小心 A bottom fin that mirrors the top exactly - they rarely match in nature.

检查支票 The two fins should differ, deliberately.

  8. 步 8

    Add the near fin.

The pectoral fin is the smallest and it sits just behind the gill curve, angled back. It is the one nearest the viewer, so it draws over the body.

小心 Making the side fin as big as the others.

检查支票 It should be clearly the smallest fin.

  9. 步 9

    Suggest the scales or pattern.

Suggest, never itemise. A handful of marks near the head lets the eye tile the rest of the body; drawing every scale turns the fish into a texture swatch.

小心 Covering the whole body in scales.

检查支票 Most of the body should still be empty.

  10. 步 10

Add what makes it a dolphin.

Species markings follow the body's curve and fade toward the belly. Put them on deliberately - they are the difference between a fish and this fish.

小心 Markings drawn flat across a curved body.

检查支票 Stripes or patches should bend with the form.

  11. 步 11

    Shade the lower half.

The underside is darker - light comes from above, even underwater in a drawing. One soft band of tone along the belly makes the whole fish read as round.

小心 Even tone everywhere, which flattens the body.

检查支票 The belly should be clearly darker than the back.

  12. 步 12

Add the water hints: bubbles up, ripples across.

Three bubbles of different sizes rising off the mouth and two long ripple lines are the entire ocean - more reads as boiling. The bubbles shrink as they rise, and the ripples drift horizontal, which is what places the dolphin in water instead of in white space.

小心 A column of same-size bubbles, or ripples that wave like flags.

检查支票 The bubbles should get smaller as they rise.

  13. 步 13

Darken the final lines and clear the rest.

Darken the silhouette and the tail, keep pattern marks light, erase the construction oval. Weight contrast finishes the drawing.

小心 Every line at the same weight.

检查支票 The outline should dominate when you squint.

看起来像是完成

所有的指南都被删除,只有你想要保持的线条, 以你想要保持的重量。如果你的线条仍然居中, 并且有屏蔽形状, 这就是你还没有做的, 大约需要30秒。

The finished drawing of a dolphin with the construction lines erased

你不会像这个样子, 也不应该。 这是用脚架的建筑, 而不是一个被人们迷惑的画画-- 重点是向你们展示哪条线是向导。

这一个教了你什么

The skill underneath is the confident single oval: fish bodies punish hesitant strokes more than almost any subject, which makes them excellent line-confidence practice wearing a costume.

The dolphin against the shark is the site's best compare-and-contrast pair: nearly the same mass, opposite tails, opposite mouths, opposite mood. Draw them in the same sitting and the identity-lives-in-decisions lesson teaches itself.

你需要的东西

Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.

如果出错

If it looks like a shark, the tail is vertical. A dolphin's tail is HORIZONTAL - it is a mammal, it swims by pumping up and down, and the flat tail says so.

If it looks like a fish, add the crease: one short arc where the bulging forehead meets the beak. No fish has it, every dolphin does.

If it looks stiff, the body is straight. Draw dolphins mid-arc - the leap is the pose everyone recognises, and the curve does most of the drawing's work.

人们对人们提出的问题

How is drawing a dolphin different from a shark?
Horizontal tail instead of vertical, a smiling beak instead of an underslung mouth, and a forehead crease no fish has. Same oval underneath.
How do I draw a dolphin's nose?
As a short cylinder growing out of the head, with one crease arc where the forehead bulge meets it. That crease is the detail that makes it read.
How do I draw a dolphin jumping?
Bend the whole body along one arc before you place anything else - the leap is the spine curve, and the fins just follow it.
How do I start drawing a dolphin?
One body oval, drawn fast in one motion, then the tail before any detail. Everything else - fins, gill, eye - attaches to that oval by overlapping it, which is what keeps the parts reading as one animal.
How big should the tail be on a dolphin?
Bigger than feels right - about a third of the body length. An undersized tail is what makes a drawn fish read as a leaf.
Do I have to draw all the scales on a dolphin?
No, and you should not. A few marks near the head let the eye tile the rest of the body on its own; drawing every scale turns the animal into a texture swatch and loses the big shape you built first.
Can a beginner draw a dolphin?
Yes - it is one oval, a triangle and some overlapping fins, with a finish-early step marked partway through.
Why do the fins on my dolphin look stuck on?
They are not crossing the body outline. Start each fin line inside the body so it visibly overlaps the oval - that overlap is the attachment, and it is the single trick this whole family of lessons keeps reusing.
