关于此绘图

A dragonfly is a needle with four rulers attached: the abdomen is absurdly long and thin - five times longer than it is wide - and the four wings all attach at nearly the same point on the thorax, held flat and perpendicular like a biplane that grew a tail. The eyes then eat the head entirely.

The build is the standard insect one: three segments back to front, six legs from the thorax, wings overlapping the body.

一步

  1. 步 1

Begin at the back - the abdomen oval.

Insects are drawn back to front: the abdomen is the biggest of the three segments and it sets the scale for everything, so it goes down first, in one motion, larger than instinct suggests.

小心 Starting at the head and running out of room behind.

检查支票 The abdomen should be the largest of your three ovals.

  2. 步 2

Add the second mass, the thorax, ahead of the first.

The thorax is the machine room - every leg and every wing attaches to it and to nothing else. Draw it distinct from the abdomen, with a visible waist between the two on most species.

小心 Merging thorax and abdomen into one blob.

检查支票 You should see a pinch where thorax meets abdomen.

  3. 步 3

Add the head - the smallest of the three.

Insect heads are small - usually the smallest of the three masses by far - and most of what you think of as the head is actually eyes. Keep it little and let the eyes dominate it.

小心 An oversized head, which turns the insect into a cartoon.

检查支票 The head should be clearly the smallest segment.

  4. 步 4

Draw both eyes on the sides of the head.

Compound eyes wrap the sides of the head like a motorcycle helmet's visor - two big domes taking up most of the head's surface. Their size is the single most insect-like thing you will draw.

小心 Small forward-facing eyes, which mammalise the face.

检查支票 The two eyes together should cover most of the head.

  5. 步 5

Draw the two antennae from the front of the head.

Two strokes, drawn fast and matching - the antennae are the insect's most delicate lines and they punish hesitation the way whiskers do. Draw the second by comparing it to the first.

小心 Wobbly antennae built from short careful passes.

检查支票 Both antennae should curve the same way, the same amount.

  6. 步 6

Draw the near legs - three, and every one from the thorax.

All six legs come from the thorax - never the abdomen, which is the error that gives every beginner's insect away. Each leg is three straight segments with two visible joints.

小心 Legs sprouting from the abdomen.

检查支票 Every leg should trace back to the middle segment.

  7. 步 7

    Draw the remaining three legs.

The far legs are partly hidden by the body, so they are drawn shorter and interrupted - which is what puts the near side in front. Compare their angles to the near legs rather than inventing new ones.

小心 Far legs drawn full length, floating beside the body.

检查支票 The far legs should be visibly interrupted by the body.

  8. 步 8

Draw the wings from the thorax back.

Wings lie ON the body, crossing its outline - the overlap is the attachment, exactly as it was for fins and bird wings. Draw each wing as one shape from its thorax root.

小心 Wings floating beside the body, touching nothing.

检查支票 Each wing should visibly cross the body outline.

  9. 步 9

Put in the main wing veins only.

Two or three structural veins per wing are enough - the eye tiles the rest. A fully veined wing goes grey and reads as stained glass rather than membrane.

小心 Veining every cell of the wing.

检查支票 Most of each wing should still be empty.

  10. 步 10

Mark the body with the dragonfly pattern.

Insect patterns follow the segments: stripes ring the abdomen, spots sit inside segment boundaries. Pattern that ignores the segmentation flattens the body instantly.

小心 Pattern drawn across segment boundaries as if on flat paper.

检查支票 Every stripe or spot should respect a segment edge.

  11. 步 11

    Complete the dragonfly specifics.

Whatever identifies the species goes on last - a sting, a spot count, a horn - placed exactly and stopped early. One correct identifying mark beats five approximate ones.

小心 Leading with the identifying detail before the build works.

检查支票 The insect should read as its species at arm's length.

  12. 步 12

Add a soft shadow pool beneath the legs.

Two soft overlapping arcs under the legs are the whole ground - an insect is small enough that a full ground line overstates it. The shadow sits directly below the body's mass, slightly forward of the abdomen, and it is what makes six thin legs read as standing rather than dangling.

小心 A hard ground line, which reads as a table edge at this scale.

检查支票 The shadow should sit below the thorax and abdomen, not the head.

  13. 步 13

Go over the keepers and erase the guides.

Weight the three segment outlines and the near legs, keep veins and far legs light, erase the guides. Depth in a drawing this small is mostly line-weight contrast.

小心 Equal weight on near and far legs.

检查支票 Near legs darker than far legs, everywhere.

The finished drawing of a dragonfly with the construction lines erased

你不会像这个样子, 也不应该。 这是用脚架的建筑, 而不是一个被人们迷惑的画画-- 重点是向你们展示哪条线是向导。

这一个教了你什么

This is a segmentation lesson: three masses whose ratio carries the species, and appendages that all obey one attachment rule. Learn where things connect and insects stop being complicated and start being small.

The dragonfly is the insect family's proportion extreme, the giraffe of the set: a five-to-one abdomen nobody draws long enough on the first try. It is also the family's cleanest wing study - four simple shapes, one attachment point, no folding to negotiate.

你需要的东西

Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.

如果出错

If it reads as a damselfly or a fly, the wings are wrong: a dragonfly at rest holds all four straight OUT, flat and perpendicular to the body, never folded back.

If the abdomen looks like a tail, segment it: five or six short cross-ticks along its length turn the needle into a jointed body.

If the head is not reading, enlarge the eyes until they touch: a dragonfly's two eyes meet at the top of the head and cover almost all of it.

How do I draw dragonfly wings?
All four straight out from nearly the same point on the thorax, flat and perpendicular to the body - a biplane, not a moth. Folded-back wings belong to the damselfly.
How long is a dragonfly's body?
The abdomen alone is about five times longer than it is wide - longer than feels reasonable. Add five or six segment ticks so the needle reads as jointed.
How do I draw a dragonfly's eyes?
Two domes so large they meet at the top of the head and cover nearly all of it. If the head still shows around the eyes, they are too small.
Can I draw a dragonfly on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - every step works on paper, and the printable sheet has the construction on one page and the finished sketch on the other. Photograph the result and it is measured like any canvas drawing.
How many body parts does a dragonfly have?
Three, in a row: abdomen biggest, thorax in the middle, head smallest. Getting that size order right is most of the drawing.
Where do the legs attach on a dragonfly?
All six to the thorax - the middle segment - and never to the abdomen. Legs off the abdomen are the error that gives every beginner insect away.
Can a beginner draw a dragonfly?
Yes - it is three ovals, six jointed lines and a pattern, with a finish-early step marked partway through so a hard day still ends with a complete drawing.
How do I draw the wings on a dragonfly?
As shapes laid OVER the body, crossing its outline, with two or three veins each. The overlap is the attachment; full veining turns membrane into stained glass.
Why does my dragonfly look like a cartoon bug?
Usually the head is too big and the eyes too small. Shrink the head to the smallest of the three segments and let two big dome eyes wrap its sides.
