Aangaande hierdie tekening

A duck is the easiest bird there is, because the water does half the work: the body is a boat, the bottom of it disappears below the waterline, and there is only one leg problem to solve or none at all. The whole character lives in the flat bill.

The build is the standard bird one - egg, head circle, beak off the skull - with this species' proportions and markings on top.

Stap met stap

  1. Stap 1

Draw one oval for the whole body of the duck.

Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.

Pas op Building the body from several small arcs.

Gaan na The body should be one smooth closed shape.

  2. Stap 2

Put the head in as a circle, set forward.

Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.

Pas op An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.

Gaan na About four head-widths should fit along the body.

  3. Stap 3

Run two lines from the head down into the body.

Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.

Pas op Leaving the head disconnected from the body.

Gaan na Both neck curves should touch head and body.

  4. Stap 4

Add the beak, which is what makes it a duck.

The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.

Pas op Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.

Gaan na The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.

  5. Stap 5

Add the eye high on the head.

A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.

Pas op Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.

Gaan na The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.

  6. Stap 6

    Draw the near wing.

The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.

Pas op Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.

Gaan na The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.

  7. Stap 7

    Suggest the feather layers.

Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.

Pas op Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.

Gaan na You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.

  8. Stap 8

Put the legs on, and check where they attach.

Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.

Pas op Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.

Gaan na The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.

  9. Stap 9

Add the tail and its angle.

The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.

Pas op A tail at war with the angle of the body.

Gaan na The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.

  10. Stap 10

Add the front of the body.

The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.

Pas op A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.

Gaan na The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.

  11. Stap 11

    Put in the duck colouring.

Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.

Pas op Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.

Gaan na Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.

  12. Stap 12

Suggest the breast feathers - three or four V-marks.

Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.

Pas op Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.

Gaan na The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.

  13. Stap 13

Add ground and shadow so it stops floating.

One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.

Pas op Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.

Gaan na The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.

  14. Stap 14

Firm up the keepers, remove the guides.

Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.

Pas op Uniform line weight over the whole bird.

Gaan na Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

The finished drawing of a duck with the construction lines erased

This is an attachment lesson: wing over body, beak out of skull, legs further back than they look. Everything on a bird overlaps something, and overlap is the cheapest depth cue in drawing.

The duck adds one idea the other birds do not have: the waterline. An object partly hidden by a surface reads as sitting in that surface, and that single trick draws every boat and bath toy you will ever attempt.

Wat jy nodig het

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

As dit verkeerd gaan

If it looks like a goose, the neck is too long. A duck's head sits close to the body on a short S of a neck - lengthen it and the species changes.

If the bill is not reading, it is too pointed. A duck's bill is a flat spatula, wider at the tip than a songbird's whole head, with one line along it for the mouth.

If it looks like it is floating ON the water rather than in it, draw the waterline crossing the body - the bottom third of the boat shape should be underwater.

Vrae wat mense vra

How do I draw a duck's bill?
As a flat spatula shape, wide at the tip, with one line along its length. A pointed beak turns the duck into a songbird immediately.
How do I draw a duck on water?
Draw the whole body, then a waterline crossing it so the bottom third disappears. Two ripple lines and the water is done.
Why does my duck look like a goose?
The neck is too long. A duck's head sits close to the body - shorten the neck and the bird comes back.
How do I start drawing a duck?
With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
Where do the legs go on a duck?
Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
How do I draw the feathers on a duck?
As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
Can a beginner draw a duck?
Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
What size should the head be on a duck?
Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
