How to Draw a Hummingbird
1 / 14
Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.
The body should be one smooth closed shape.

Momba ity sary ity
A hummingbird is drawn mid-air or not at all, and the pose is specific: body tilted forty-five degrees, needle beak reaching into a flower, wings swept up and BACK in the figure-eight blur of a hover. The wings are the lesson - not feathered shapes but two long swept blades, drawn with your fastest line.
Underneath the feathers this is an egg with a head, like every bird on the site; the species lives in the beak, the tilt and the markings.

Endrika 1
Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.
Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.
Mitandrema Building the body from several small arcs.
Jereo The body should be one smooth closed shape.
-
Endrika 2
Add a small circle for the head.
Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.
Mitandrema An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.
Jereo About four head-widths should fit along the body.
-
Endrika 3
Connect head and body - a neck, not a stick.
Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.
Mitandrema Leaving the head disconnected from the body.
Jereo Both neck curves should touch head and body.
-
Endrika 4
Add the beak, which is what makes it a hummingbird.
The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.
Mitandrema Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.
Jereo The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.
-
Endrika 5
Add the eye - small, and nearer the beak than the back.
A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.
Mitandrema Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.
Jereo The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.
-
Endrika 6
Add the folded wing, overlapping the body.
The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.
Mitandrema Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.
Jereo The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.
-
Endrika 7
Block the feather groups in.
Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.
Mitandrema Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.
Jereo You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.
-
Endrika 8
Draw the legs and toes.
Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.
Mitandrema Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.
Jereo The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.
-
Endrika 9
Draw the tail.
The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.
Mitandrema A tail at war with the angle of the body.
Jereo The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.
-
Endrika 10
Add the front of the body.
The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.
Mitandrema A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.
Jereo The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.
-
Endrika 11
Put in the hummingbird colouring.
Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.
Mitandrema Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.
Jereo Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.
-
Endrika 12
Add a few breast feather ticks, following the chest curve.
Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.
Mitandrema Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.
Jereo The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.
-
Endrika 13
Put the surface in, and the shadow under the body.
One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.
Mitandrema Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.
Jereo The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.
-
Endrika 14
Press harder on the final lines and erase the blocking-in.
Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.
Mitandrema Uniform line weight over the whole bird.
Jereo Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

Ny tena fampianaran'ity iray ity anao
The skill underneath is placement against a mass: every feature reads relative to the egg, so the egg has to be right first. That order - mass, then features - is the whole method.
The hummingbird is the bird family's motion lesson: a pose that only exists in movement, sold by wing angle and body tilt rather than any blur trick. Drawing an action the eye cannot freeze is a skill, and this is its gentlest entry.

Ny ilainao
Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.
Raha tsy mandeha tsara ny zavatra
If it looks perched and shrunken, remember the legs: hummingbirds barely have visible ones - two ticks at most, tucked tight, with the body floating free.
If the beak is wrong, it is too short or too thick: the bill is a needle, as long as the body is deep and barely thicker than a line.
If the wings look like a songbird's, they are too low: a hovering hummingbird's wings sweep up and back from the shoulder, long and narrow, more blade than fan.

Fanontaniana napetrak'ireo olona
- How do I draw a hummingbird's wings?
- As two long narrow blades swept up and back from the shoulder, drawn with your fastest stroke - blade, not fan. The sweep angle alone says hovering.
- How long is a hummingbird's beak?
- A needle as long as the body is deep and barely thicker than a line - two nearly parallel strokes. Aim it into a flower and the pose explains itself.
- Should I draw a hummingbird perched or flying?
- Hovering, at a forty-five degree body tilt. Perched hummingbirds read as generic small birds - the hover IS the species to most eyes.
- How do I start drawing a hummingbird?
- With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
- Where do the legs go on a hummingbird?
- Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
- How do I draw the feathers on a hummingbird?
- As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
- Can a beginner draw a hummingbird?
- Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
- What size should the head be on a hummingbird?
- Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
