Begin at the back - the abdomen oval.

The abdomen should be the largest of your three ovals.

Dibuixes en paper en lloc d'això?

El paper compta exactament el mateix.

Quant a aquest dibuix

A ladybug is a drawn dome: the spotted shell is one hemisphere split by a single centre line, and the two facts that make it read are that the spots are ASYMMETRIC - different sizes, never mirrored - and that each spot must foreshorten into an oval as it nears the shell's edge, because it lies on a curved surface.

Like every insect here, it is three ovals in a row - abdomen, thorax, head, in descending size - with all six legs and every wing attached to the middle one.

Pas per pas

  1. Pas 1

Begin at the back - the abdomen oval.

Insects are drawn back to front: the abdomen is the biggest of the three segments and it sets the scale for everything, so it goes down first, in one motion, larger than instinct suggests.

Vigila amb Starting at the head and running out of room behind.

Comprova The abdomen should be the largest of your three ovals.

  2. Pas 2

Add the thorax in front of it.

The thorax is the machine room - every leg and every wing attaches to it and to nothing else. Draw it distinct from the abdomen, with a visible waist between the two on most species.

Vigila amb Merging thorax and abdomen into one blob.

Comprova You should see a pinch where thorax meets abdomen.

  3. Pas 3

Add the head - the smallest of the three.

Insect heads are small - usually the smallest of the three masses by far - and most of what you think of as the head is actually eyes. Keep it little and let the eyes dominate it.

Vigila amb An oversized head, which turns the insect into a cartoon.

Comprova The head should be clearly the smallest segment.

  4. Pas 4

Put the eyes in: two big domes on the head's sides.

Compound eyes wrap the sides of the head like a motorcycle helmet's visor - two big domes taking up most of the head's surface. Their size is the single most insect-like thing you will draw.

Vigila amb Small forward-facing eyes, which mammalise the face.

Comprova The two eyes together should cover most of the head.

  5. Pas 5

Put the antennae on with two committed strokes.

Two strokes, drawn fast and matching - the antennae are the insect's most delicate lines and they punish hesitation the way whiskers do. Draw the second by comparing it to the first.

Vigila amb Wobbly antennae built from short careful passes.

Comprova Both antennae should curve the same way, the same amount.

  6. Pas 6

Run the near legs down from the thorax.

All six legs come from the thorax - never the abdomen, which is the error that gives every beginner's insect away. Each leg is three straight segments with two visible joints.

Vigila amb Legs sprouting from the abdomen.

Comprova Every leg should trace back to the middle segment.

  7. Pas 7

Put in the other three legs.

The far legs are partly hidden by the body, so they are drawn shorter and interrupted - which is what puts the near side in front. Compare their angles to the near legs rather than inventing new ones.

Vigila amb Far legs drawn full length, floating beside the body.

Comprova The far legs should be visibly interrupted by the body.

  8. Pas 8

Lay the wings over the body.

Wings lie ON the body, crossing its outline - the overlap is the attachment, exactly as it was for fins and bird wings. Draw each wing as one shape from its thorax root.

Vigila amb Wings floating beside the body, touching nothing.

Comprova Each wing should visibly cross the body outline.

  9. Pas 9

Add the structural veins and stop.

Two or three structural veins per wing are enough - the eye tiles the rest. A fully veined wing goes grey and reads as stained glass rather than membrane.

Vigila amb Veining every cell of the wing.

Comprova Most of each wing should still be empty.

  10. Pas 10

Add the body pattern that says ladybug.

Insect patterns follow the segments: stripes ring the abdomen, spots sit inside segment boundaries. Pattern that ignores the segmentation flattens the body instantly.

Vigila amb Pattern drawn across segment boundaries as if on flat paper.

Comprova Every stripe or spot should respect a segment edge.

  11. Pas 11

Draw whatever else a ladybug carries.

Whatever identifies the species goes on last - a sting, a spot count, a horn - placed exactly and stopped early. One correct identifying mark beats five approximate ones.

Vigila amb Leading with the identifying detail before the build works.

Comprova The insect should read as its species at arm's length.

  12. Pas 12

Anchor it with a shadow pool below.

Two soft overlapping arcs under the legs are the whole ground - an insect is small enough that a full ground line overstates it. The shadow sits directly below the body's mass, slightly forward of the abdomen, and it is what makes six thin legs read as standing rather than dangling.

Vigila amb A hard ground line, which reads as a table edge at this scale.

Comprova The shadow should sit below the thorax and abdomen, not the head.

  13. Pas 13

Darken the three segments and clear the rest.

Weight the three segment outlines and the near legs, keep veins and far legs light, erase the guides. Depth in a drawing this small is mostly line-weight contrast.

Vigila amb Equal weight on near and far legs.

Comprova Near legs darker than far legs, everywhere.

The finished drawing of a ladybug with the construction lines erased

El teu no tindrà aquesta pinta, i se suposa que no és la construcció amb la bastida agafada, no un dibuix fet per a ser admirat, el punt és mostrar-vos quines de les vostres línies eren guies.

El que aquest t'ensenya de veritat

This is a segmentation lesson: three masses whose ratio carries the species, and appendages that all obey one attachment rule. Learn where things connect and insects stop being complicated and start being small.

The ladybug is the site's smallest sphere-mapping exercise: every spot is a test of whether you believe the surface is curved. The pumpkin taught lines on a sphere; this teaches shapes on one, which is harder to fake.

El que necessites.

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

Si no va malament

If it reads as a button, the spots are perfect circles everywhere: spots near the shell's edge squash into ovals - that foreshortening is what makes the dome.

If it looks like a toy, the spots are symmetric. Real ladybug spots vary in size and placement across the centre line - mirror nothing.

If the head end is confusing, remember the ladybug wears two collars: the small true head, then the pronotum plate behind it, THEN the spotted shell.

Preguntes a la gent pregunta

How do I draw the spots on a ladybug?
Different sizes, never mirrored, and squashing into ovals as they near the shell's edge - shapes lying on a curved surface must foreshorten. Circles everywhere flatten the dome into a button.
How many spots does a ladybug have?
Five to seven works. The count matters less than the asymmetry - a mirrored pattern reads as a toy instantly.
What is the plate behind a ladybug's head?
The pronotum - a black collar between the tiny true head and the spotted shell. Drawing it is what stops the head looking glued straight onto the dome.
Can I draw a ladybug on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - every step works on paper, and the printable sheet has the construction on one page and the finished sketch on the other. Photograph the result and it is measured like any canvas drawing.
How many body parts does a ladybug have?
Three, in a row: abdomen biggest, thorax in the middle, head smallest. Getting that size order right is most of the drawing.
Where do the legs attach on a ladybug?
All six to the thorax - the middle segment - and never to the abdomen. Legs off the abdomen are the error that gives every beginner insect away.
Can a beginner draw a ladybug?
Yes - it is three ovals, six jointed lines and a pattern, with a finish-early step marked partway through so a hard day still ends with a complete drawing.
How do I draw the wings on a ladybug?
As shapes laid OVER the body, crossing its outline, with two or three veins each. The overlap is the attachment; full veining turns membrane into stained glass.
Why does my ladybug look like a cartoon bug?
Usually the head is too big and the eyes too small. Shrink the head to the smallest of the three segments and let two big dome eyes wrap its sides.
