Про цей малюнок

A lemon is a sphere pulled at both ends, and the pulls are everything: two small blunt nipples, one at each tip, breaking an otherwise smooth oval. Leave them off and you have drawn an egg on its side; overdo them and you have drawn a lemon from a cartoon. Each is a knuckle-sized bump, no more.

Like every simple form on this site, it is one mass plus value: block it in, break the outline where the real thing does, then let light do the rest.

Крок за кроком

  1. Крок 1

Block the whole shape in as one oval.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

Обережно Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

Перевірити It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. Крок 2

Add the irregularity to the outline.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

Обережно Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

Перевірити The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. Крок 3

    Add the centre lines.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

Обережно Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

Перевірити The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. Крок 4

    Add the stalk or top.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

Обережно Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

Перевірити The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. Крок 5

    Draw the top hollow.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

Обережно Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

Перевірити The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. Крок 6

Pick a light direction and commit.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

Обережно Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

Перевірити You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. Крок 7

    Shade the dark half.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

Обережно Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

Перевірити The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. Крок 8

Leave a thin light line at the outer edge.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

Обережно Running the shading tight to the outline.

Перевірити A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. Крок 9

Draw the highlight where the light hits.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

Обережно A large or doubled highlight.

Перевірити The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. Крок 10

    Draw the lemon texture.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

Обережно Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

Перевірити Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. Крок 11

    Put the cast shadow down.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

Обережно An even grey puddle not touching the object.

Перевірити The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. Крок 12

Weight the outline and lose the construction.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    Обережно Equal weight everywhere.

Перевірити Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

The finished drawing of a lemon with the construction lines erased

Це побудова з відібраним риштуванням, а не малюнок, який ви створили для захоплення, - суть у тому, щоб показати вам, які з ваших ліній були напрямними.

Чого ця тебе вчить

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The lemon is a silhouette-calibration exercise: the difference between egg, lemon and cartoon lemon is a few millimetres at two points. It trains the restraint that stops a corrected outline becoming an exaggerated one - the exact judgement the caricature-prone need most.

Що потрібно

A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.

Якщо щось піде не так

If it reads as an egg, the tips are missing: each end of the oval needs its small blunt bump, and the stem-end one is slightly bigger.

If it reads as a cartoon, the tips are too long - they are bumps, not horns, each about a tenth of the fruit's length.

If the peel is not reading, borrow the orange's rule: tiny dots in the mid-tone zone only, slightly sparser than an orange's, fading toward the highlight.

Запитання людей

What makes a lemon shape different from an egg?
Two small blunt bumps, one at each tip, with the stem end's slightly bigger. That is the entire difference - each is knuckle-sized, never a horn.
How do I draw a lemon's peel texture?
Like an orange's but sparser: tiny dots in the middle tones only, fading to nothing near the highlight. The clean lit spot is what says waxy peel.
How do I shade a yellow fruit in pencil?
Keep the whole range lighter than you would for an apple - the darkest lemon shadow is a mid grey. Value stands in for colour, and yellow is a light value.
Can I draw a lemon on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a lemon?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a lemon?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my lemon look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a lemon?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a lemon need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
