How to Draw an Orange
1 / 12
Draw the overall mass first.
It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

An orange is a sphere with a texture, and the texture is the lesson: the dimpled peel is suggested with a scatter of tiny dots in the mid-tone zone only - never in the highlight, never in the deepest shadow. Where the dots stop is what tells the viewer the surface turned away from the light.
Like every simple form on this site, it is one mass plus value: block it in, break the outline where the real thing does, then let light do the rest.

ნაბიჯი 1
Draw the overall mass first.
One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.
გნთმაგაი! Building the mass from many small safe strokes.
ოპჲგვპკა It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.
-
ნაბიჯი 2
Break the outline so it is not a perfect oval.
Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.
გნთმაგაი! Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.
ოპჲგვპკა The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.
-
ნაბიჯი 3
Draw the two axes.
Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.
გნთმაგაი! Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.
ოპჲგვპკა The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.
-
ნაბიჯი 4
Put the stem on.
Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.
გნთმაგაი! Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.
ოპჲგვპკა The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.
-
ნაბიჯი 5
Put the top curve in.
The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.
გნთმაგაი! Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.
ოპჲგვპკა The dip should curve, not sit flat.
-
ნაბიჯი 6
Set the light and note it in the corner.
Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.
გნთმაგაი! Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.
ოპჲგვპკა You should be able to point at the light source.
-
ნაბიჯი 7
Add tone on the shadow side.
Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.
გნთმაგაი! Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.
ოპჲგვპკა The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.
-
ნაბიჯი 8
Put the reflected light in at the edge.
Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.
გნთმაგაი! Running the shading tight to the outline.
ოპჲგვპკა A lighter line should separate shading from edge.
-
ნაბიჯი 9
Draw the highlight where the light hits.
One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.
გნთმაგაი! A large or doubled highlight.
ოპჲგვპკა The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.
-
ნაბიჯი 10
Draw the orange texture.
Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.
გნთმაგაი! Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.
ოპჲგვპკა Marks should bend with the surface.
-
ნაბიჯი 11
Add the shadow it sits in.
Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.
გნთმაგაი! An even grey puddle not touching the object.
ოპჲგვპკა The shadow should touch the object's base.
-
ნაბიჯი 12
Strengthen what stays and erase the guides.
Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.
გნთმაგაი! Equal weight everywhere.
ოპჲგვპკა Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.
The orange adds one rule to the sphere: texture obeys light. Dots in the mid-tones and nowhere else is a principle that draws every dimpled, pitted or woven surface you will ever meet.

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

If it looks like a ball, the button is missing: the small star where the stem was attached, drawn as a circled dot, is the single mark that says citrus.
If the texture flattens it, the dots have wandered into the highlight. The lit spot stays clean - texture lives in the middle tones and fades out both ways.
If it looks grey, the shading was scrubbed. Build the shadow side in curved strokes that follow the sphere, and let them stay visible - they double as texture.

- How do I draw an orange's texture?
- A scatter of tiny dots in the middle tones only - none in the highlight, none in the deep shadow. Where the dots fade is what makes the surface turn.
- What makes it read as an orange and not a ball?
- The button - the small circled star where the stem attached, set off-centre near the top. One mark, total identification.
- Do I need to draw a leaf with my orange?
- Optional, but one glossy leaf off the stem button settles the question of scale and adds the only hard edge on an otherwise soft form.
- Can I draw an orange on paper instead of the canvas?
- Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
- How do I start drawing an orange?
- One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
- How do I shade an orange?
- Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
- Why does my orange look flat?
- Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
- Can a beginner draw an orange?
- Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
- Does an orange need a cast shadow?
- Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
