How to Draw a Rhino
1 / 19
Draw the ribcage first. It is the biggest mass in the rhino.
The chest oval should take up around a third of the body's length on its own.

A rhino is armour with a horn on the front, and both read through edges: the body's skin hangs in plates, so the silhouette has CORNERS where every other animal curves - a step at the shoulder, a step at the hip - and the horn curves BACK toward the animal, never forward, which is the single most-missed fact about it.
Like every four-legged animal on this site, it is built from two masses and a spine: a ribcage, a pelvis, and one curve joining them. Get those three right and the rest is placement.

സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 1
Draw the ribcage first. It is the biggest mass in the rhino.
The ribcage is the largest single mass in almost every four-legged animal, and drawing it too small is the most common structural error in the whole category. Draw it in one motion and make it bigger than feels right.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Drawing the chest small to leave room for everything else.
പരിശോധന The chest oval should take up around a third of the body's length on its own.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 2
Put in the hip mass - smaller than the chest on almost every animal.
The gap between the two masses is information: it is most of what separates a long animal from a compact one. Decide the gap deliberately rather than letting it happen.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Butting the pelvis directly against the chest.
പരിശോധന You should see clear space between the two ovals.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 3
Connect the masses with one continuous spine.
One continuous curve, drawn in one pass. The spine sets the whole animal's attitude, and a spine assembled from three short strokes reads as three different animals stitched together.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Drawing the spine as separate flat segments.
പരിശോധന The curve should touch both masses without a corner.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 4
Place the skull and the angle the neck leaves the chest at.
Note where the neck leaves the chest before you place the skull - on most animals it comes off the front of the chest mass, not the top, and that single angle carries the species.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Hanging the head above the body instead of in front of it.
പരിശോധന The neck guide should leave the FRONT half of the chest oval.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 5
Draw the neck as a solid, not a stick.
A neck is a solid with real thickness, and on most animals it is thicker than you think - nearly as deep as the head itself. Two curves, one over, one under.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക A thin stick neck, which makes any animal look fragile.
പരിശോധന The neck should be nearly as thick as the head is tall.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 6
Connect the two ovals along the back and along the underside.
This is where the animal stops being two eggs. Let the topline follow the spine you already drew and keep the belly line taut - a sagging belly is a decision, not an accident.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Ignoring the spine curve you drew and inventing a new back.
പരിശോധന The topline should agree with the spine curve underneath it.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 7
Add the underside: one sagging curve.
The belly is a separate decision from the masses: it hangs below the line joining them, sagging most midway, and how much it sags is part of the animal - taut on a deer, generous on a cow. Draw it as one curve, not two arcs meeting.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക A straight line between the ovals, which reads as a table.
പരിശോധന The belly should dip below both mass bottoms at its middle.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 8
Close the body: the chest front and the rump.
Two curves seal the body into one shape: down the front of the chest into the belly, and from the top of the hips around the rump to meet it. Without them the animal has no front or back and the legs float - this is the step that turns parts into a body.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Leaving the ends open because the ovals suggest them.
പരിശോധന You should be able to trace the whole body without lifting your pen.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 9
Put in the forelegs - and remember they bend.
Legs are chains of segments with a joint at each bend, and every leg bends somewhere. Draw joint to joint in straight strokes first; curves come later if at all.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Straight tube legs with no joints, which read as furniture.
പരിശോധന Each front leg should bend at least once.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 10
Add the rear legs, checking their length against the front.
The hind legs fold the opposite way to the front pair - the hock points backwards. Compare their length against the front legs rather than judging them alone.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Back legs bending the same way as the front ones.
പരിശോധന Front and back feet should reach the same ground line.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 11
Add the ears at the top of the skull.
Ears attach further back on the skull than feels natural, and their shape is one of the strongest species signals you have. Draw the second by comparing it to the first.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Planting the ears on top of the head like handles.
പരിശോധന Both ears should attach behind the midpoint of the skull.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 12
Draw the front of the head - muzzle, nose, eye.
The muzzle projects forward from the lower half of the head mass. Its length relative to the skull is the proportion to measure - it is the one that changes species when you get it wrong.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക A muzzle pointing down instead of forward.
പരിശോധന The eye should sit in the top half of the head mass.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 13
Draw the tail and the details that say rhino rather than animal.
Detail is suggested, never itemised. Put the marks where they identify the animal and stop early - texture spread evenly everywhere flattens the drawing back out.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Covering the body evenly in fur marks.
പരിശോധന Step back: the big shapes should still read first.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 14
Give the rhino a real eye: three circles and a brow line.
An eye is built in layers - iris, pupil inside it, one small highlight, and the brow line above that gives it a direction to look. The highlight and pupil must not touch, and the brow is what turns a circle into a gaze. This one feature carries more life than the rest of the head together.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക A single black dot, which reads as a bead.
പരിശോധന The highlight should sit at the pupil's edge, not inside it.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 15
Draw all four feet: base, then the toe line.
A leg without a foot is a pole. One short base line at the bottom of each leg, angled with the ground, plus a single toe split, and all four legs suddenly bear weight. Feet are also where the ground line will attach, so place all four bases at nearly the same height.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Legs ending in points, or feet at four different heights.
പരിശോധന All four feet should sit within one pencil-width of the same line.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 16
Add ground and shadow so the rhino stops floating.
The ground is one line through the feet, and the cast shadow is one flattened arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. Together they anchor the animal - without them even a perfect construction floats in white space. Keep the shadow tight under the body; a wide puddle reads as water.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Skipping it, leaving the animal hovering.
പരിശോധന The shadow should touch at least two of the feet.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 17
Add fur tufts along chest, belly and rump.
Fur is an edge event: a few tufts where the coat genuinely hangs - chest, belly, rump - and nowhere else. Each tuft leans the way the coat grows, back and down, and the outline should still read as one body between them. This is also where the sealed construction line stops looking mechanical.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Scalloping the entire outline evenly, which turns any animal into a sheep.
പരിശോധന Most of the outline should still be smooth between the tufts.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 18
Hatch the underside, all strokes one direction.
Two or three patches of parallel strokes - under the belly, behind the shoulder - all leaning the same way, and the drawing suddenly has light in it. Keep the patches small: shading in a sketch is a note about where the dark lives, not a rendering.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Scrubbing tone everywhere, which flattens the sketch it took fifteen steps to build.
പരിശോധന All the hatch strokes should lean the same direction.
-
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് ചെയ്യുക 19
Go over the lines you are keeping and lose the guides.
Press harder on the outline and the face, leave the small marks light, and erase the construction ovals. That weight difference is what makes the drawing look decided.
കാത്തിരിക്കുക Going over every line at the same weight.
പരിശോധന The outline should be clearly darker than the interior marks.

ഇവൻ ശരിക്കും നിന്നെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
The skill under the subject is comparison: each new part is judged against one already on the page, never against your idea of the animal. That habit is what fixes proportion everywhere.
The rhino is the quadruped family's edge lesson: the first animal whose outline has deliberate corners. Where the sheep taught soft-against-hard in texture, the rhino teaches it in the silhouette itself.

അത് തെറ്റാണെങ്കില്
If the horn is wrong, it leans the wrong way: a rhino's horn sweeps back toward the ears in a shallow curve - a forward-leaning horn reads as a party hat.
If it looks soft, add the plate steps: shallow corners in the outline at shoulder and hip, plus one or two skin-fold lines, turn hide into armour.
If it reads as a hippo, drop the head: a rhino carries its head LOW, nose near the ground, hanging off a shoulder hump that is the animal's highest point.

- Which way does a rhino's horn curve?
- Back, toward the ears, in a shallow sweep - never forward. The forward-leaning horn is the most common rhino error there is, and it reads as a party hat.
- How do I make a rhino's skin look like armour?
- Put corners in the silhouette - a step at the shoulder, a step at the hip - plus one or two fold lines. Armour is an outline quality before it is a texture.
- How does a rhino carry its head?
- Low, nose near the ground, hung from a shoulder hump that is the animal's highest point. A raised head turns the rhino into a hippo with a horn.
- How many steps does it take to draw a rhino?
- Twelve here: two body masses, the spine, the head and neck, the silhouette, four legs in two pairs, then features, detail and line weight. About 14 minutes at a comfortable pace.
- Where do the legs attach on a rhino?
- To the two masses, not the outline - front legs to the chest oval, back legs to the pelvis. Legs hung from the belly line are why animal drawings collapse.
- Can a beginner draw a rhino?
- Yes - the construction is two ovals and a curve, and there is a finish-early step marked partway through that leaves you with a complete drawing rather than an abandoned one.
- Do I need to draw fur on a rhino?
- Only at the silhouette edge, and only where the coat is genuinely long. Fur drawn all over turns any animal into a rug.
- What should I practise before drawing a rhino?
- Five minutes of ellipses or line control. The whole build is ovals and committed curves, and warm hands make it a different exercise.
