How to Draw a Rooster
1 / 14
Draw the body as one oval and stop there.
The body should be one smooth closed shape.

Über diese Zeichnung
A rooster is drawn back to front: the tail sickles are the biggest shapes on the bird, so they are blocked in with the body, not added after. Three sweeping curves arcing up and over, a proud S of a neck cascading hackle feathers, and a comb like a crown worn at an angle.
The build is the standard bird one - egg, head circle, beak off the skull - with this species' proportions and markings on top.
Schritt für Schritt
-
Schritt 1
Draw the body as one oval and stop there.
Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.
Vorsicht! Building the body from several small arcs.
Kontrolle The body should be one smooth closed shape.
-
Schritt 2
Add a small circle for the head.
Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.
Vorsicht! An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.
Kontrolle About four head-widths should fit along the body.
-
Schritt 3
Connect head and body - a neck, not a stick.
Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.
Vorsicht! Leaving the head disconnected from the body.
Kontrolle Both neck curves should touch head and body.
-
Schritt 4
Add the beak, which is what makes it a rooster.
The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.
Vorsicht! Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.
Kontrolle The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.
-
Schritt 5
Add the eye - small, and nearer the beak than the back.
A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.
Vorsicht! Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.
Kontrolle The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.
-
Schritt 6
Draw the near wing.
The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.
Vorsicht! Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.
Kontrolle The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.
-
Schritt 7
Add the wing feather divisions.
Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.
Vorsicht! Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.
Kontrolle You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.
-
Schritt 8
Add both legs and the feet.
Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.
Vorsicht! Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.
Kontrolle The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.
-
Schritt 9
Draw the tail.
The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.
Vorsicht! A tail at war with the angle of the body.
Kontrolle The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.
-
Schritt 10
Round out the chest.
The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.
Vorsicht! A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.
Kontrolle The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.
-
Schritt 11
Draw the pattern this bird actually has.
Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.
Vorsicht! Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.
Kontrolle Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.
-
Schritt 12
Suggest the breast feathers - three or four V-marks.
Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.
Vorsicht! Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.
Kontrolle The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.
-
Schritt 13
Draw the ground line and the shadow beneath the rooster.
One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.
Vorsicht! Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.
Kontrolle The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.
-
Schritt 14
Darken what you are keeping, rub out the rest.
Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.
Vorsicht! Uniform line weight over the whole bird.
Kontrolle Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

Das ist die Konstruktion mit dem Gerüst, das weggenommen wurde, nicht eine Zeichnung, die jemand zum Bewundern gemacht hat - es geht darum, Ihnen zu zeigen, welche Ihrer Linien Führer waren.
Was dieser dich wirklich lehrt
What transfers is the egg-and-head build plus the discipline of drawing feather groups instead of feathers - the same restraint that draws hair, grass and fur.
The rooster teaches drawing attitude before anatomy: the same construction at a different tilt is a different bird. Rotate the body oval ten degrees chest-up and every other line - neck, tail, legs - inherits the swagger.

Was du brauchst
A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.
Wenn es schief geht
If it reads as a hen, the tail is too modest. The sickle feathers rise ABOVE head height and curve back over the body - draw them from the base outward, fast.
If the comb looks like a hat, it is detached: each arc of the comb must grow from the skull line, and the front arc leans out over the beak.
If it stands flat-footed, the chest is too low. A rooster leans back - chest high and forward, tail counterweighted behind, one leg fractionally ahead of the other.

Fragen, die die Leute stellen
- How do I draw a rooster tail?
- Three or four long sickle curves drawn from the tail base outward, each one starting steeper than the last, the longest arcing higher than the head. Draw them fast and whole - a hesitant sickle wobbles.
- How is drawing a rooster different from the chicken lesson?
- Same skeleton, three upgrades: the tail triples, the comb and wattle grow, and the whole posture tips chest-up. It is the chicken drawn with intent.
- What order should I draw the comb in?
- After the head circle, before the eye: four linked arcs riding the top of the skull, tallest arc above the eye, the front one leaning over the beak. Then place the eye under the tallest arc.
- How do I start drawing a rooster?
- With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
- Where do the legs go on a rooster?
- Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
- How do I draw the feathers on a rooster?
- As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
- Can a beginner draw a rooster?
- Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
- What size should the head be on a rooster?
- Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
