O tejto kresbe

A turkey is a small dark bird standing in front of its own firework: the fan is half the drawing, and it is built like a hand fan - spokes first, scalloped rim after. Get the spokes radiating from one point at the tail base and the fan opens; draw the rim first and it never will.

The build is the standard bird one - egg, head circle, beak off the skull - with this species' proportions and markings on top.

Krok za krokom

  1. Krok 1

Lay in the body mass first, in one motion.

Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.

Pozor. Building the body from several small arcs.

Kontrola The body should be one smooth closed shape.

  2. Krok 2

Add the head circle and note how small it is.

Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.

Pozor. An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.

Kontrola About four head-widths should fit along the body.

  3. Krok 3

Run two lines from the head down into the body.

Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.

Pozor. Leaving the head disconnected from the body.

Kontrola Both neck curves should touch head and body.

  4. Krok 4

Put the beak on, and get its angle right.

The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.

Pozor. Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.

Kontrola The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.

  5. Krok 5

Place the eye and darken the pupil.

A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.

Pozor. Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.

Kontrola The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.

  6. Krok 6

Draw the wing over the body.

The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.

Pozor. Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.

Kontrola The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.

  7. Krok 7

    Suggest the feather layers.

Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.

Pozor. Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.

Kontrola You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.

  8. Krok 8

    Draw the legs and toes.

Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.

Pozor. Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.

Kontrola The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.

  9. Krok 9

    Draw the tail.

The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.

Pozor. A tail at war with the angle of the body.

Kontrola The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.

  10. Krok 10

    Draw the breast curve.

The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.

Pozor. A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.

Kontrola The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.

  11. Krok 11

    Draw the plumage pattern.

Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.

Pozor. Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.

Kontrola Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.

  12. Krok 12

Suggest the breast feathers - three or four V-marks.

Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.

Pozor. Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.

Kontrola The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.

  13. Krok 13

Draw what the turkey stands on, plus its shadow.

One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.

Pozor. Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.

Kontrola The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.

  14. Krok 14

Go over the keepers and erase the guides.

Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.

Pozor. Uniform line weight over the whole bird.

Kontrola Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

Ako to vyzerá hotové

Rovnaká kresba s vymazanými všetkými vodiacimi líniami a len s líniami, ktoré ste chceli zachovať, v hrúbke, ktorú ste chceli. Ak má vaša kresba stále stredové čiary a blokujúce tvary, tento krok ste ešte neurobili - a trvá to asi tridsať sekúnd.

The finished drawing of a turkey with the construction lines erased

Vaša nebude vyzerať takto a ani by nemala. Toto je konštrukcia s odstráneným lešením, nie kresba, ktorú niekto urobil na obdivovanie - cieľom je ukázať vám, ktoré z vašich línií boli vodítkami.

Čo vás táto kniha vlastne naučí

The skill underneath is placement against a mass: every feature reads relative to the egg, so the egg has to be right first. That order - mass, then features - is the whole method.

The turkey teaches radial construction: the fan is the flower lesson bent behind a bird - spokes from a hidden centre, irregular rim, overlap deciding what reads in front. It is the same skill as petals, at twice the scale.

Čo potrebujete

Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.

Ak sa to pokazí

If the fan looks like a wall, the spokes are parallel. Every rachis line must aim back at a single point at the tail base - check each one against it.

If the fan swallows the bird, tuck the body lower and darker: the body overlaps the fan's bottom third, never floats in front of its centre.

If the head looks wrong, it is too big and too smooth. A turkey's head is startlingly small, bare and knobbly, with the snood draped over the beak.

Otázky, ktoré ľudia kladú

How do I draw a turkey's tail fan?
Spokes first: five or six light lines radiating from one point at the tail base, then a scalloped rim connecting their tips arc by arc, then band markings if you want them. The rim without spokes never reads as feathers.
What is the red thing on a turkey's face?
Two things: the snood, which drapes over the top of the beak, and the wattle under the chin. Draw the snood as a soft hanging curve starting above the beak - it is the single mark that says turkey.
Why does my turkey look like a peacock?
The fan is too tall and too round. A turkey's fan is a half-circle behind the body, wider than high, with a scalloped edge - a peacock's train is a full sweep of eyespotted plumes taller than the bird.
How do I start drawing a turkey?
With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
Where do the legs go on a turkey?
Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
How do I draw the feathers on a turkey?
As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
Can a beginner draw a turkey?
Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
What size should the head be on a turkey?
Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
