A bottle is a cylinder wearing a smaller cylinder, and the join between them - the shoulder - is where every drawn bottle succeeds or fails. The shoulder is a curve, not a corner: the neck flows into the body through two mirrored S-bends, and drawing them as straight diagonals produces a rocket instead.

Like everything hollow on this site, it is two ellipses and a profile: the rim, the base, and the sides that join them.

Βήμα προς βήμα

  1. Βήμα 1

Mark eye level - everything follows from it.

Everything about the ellipses follows from where your eye is. Decide now, consciously, and mark it - letting it drift mid-drawing is how the rim and base end up disagreeing.

Πρόσεχε. Not deciding, then drawing contradictory ellipses.

Έλεγχος You should be able to say if you are above or level with the rim.

  2. Βήμα 2

Add the rim - one fast ellipse.

Round three or four times in one fast continuous motion and keep the best pass. Speed is what makes an ellipse smooth - drawn slowly it lumps on one side every time.

Πρόσεχε. Building the ellipse from four careful arcs.

Έλεγχος The rim should be symmetrical about its long axis.

  3. Βήμα 3

Take both sides down from the ellipse.

Start each side exactly at the widest point of the rim ellipse. A step where side meets rim is instantly visible and almost impossible to hide later.

Πρόσεχε. Sides starting inside or outside the rim's ends.

Έλεγχος Each side should leave the rim at its widest point.

  4. Βήμα 4

Close the base, more curved than the top.

The base is further from your eye than the rim, so it is ROUNDER - same width, more curve. Getting this backwards is what makes vessels look like they are sliding off the table.

Πρόσεχε. A base flatter than the rim, or a straight line.

Έλεγχος The base curve should be rounder than the rim.

  5. Βήμα 5

Draw the wall thickness at the opening.

One curve just inside the rim gives the material its thickness and turns the top from a painted disc into an opening. It follows the rim's curve, not parallel all the way round.

Πρόσεχε. Skipping it, leaving a flat disc on top.

Έλεγχος A visible band should separate the two curves at the front.

  6. Βήμα 6

Add the neck of the bottle.

Where the profile changes is where the form lives. Draw the change on both sides at the same height - a shoulder at two heights makes the whole vessel lean.

Πρόσεχε. The profile changing at different heights left and right.

Έλεγχος Both sides should change shape at the same height.

  7. Βήμα 7

    Attach the handle.

Both ends must touch the body - a floating handle is the most common error on any vessel. And it is a strap with thickness, never a single line.

Πρόσεχε. A handle drawn as one wire line, or floating.

Έλεγχος Both handle ends should touch the vessel's side.

  8. Βήμα 8

    Draw the bottle features.

The identifying details go on last and they follow the form - a label, a pattern or a spout curves with the surface it sits on.

Πρόσεχε. Flat detail pasted over a round form.

Έλεγχος Any pattern should bend with the body.

  9. Βήμα 9

    Add tone down one side.

A cylinder's darkest band sits just INSIDE the shadow edge, not at it. Lay the strokes vertically, following the form, and build up in passes.

Πρόσεχε. Scrubbing horizontal tone across a vertical form.

Έλεγχος The darkest band should sit inside the outline.

  10. Βήμα 10

Add the bounced light at the edge.

Light bounces off the table back onto the very edge, so leave a thin lighter strip at the outline. That strip is what makes the form read as round rather than flat-shaded.

Πρόσεχε. Shading right up to the edge.

Έλεγχος A light strip should separate shading from outline.

  11. Βήμα 11

Add the shadow on the table.

Darkest where it touches the base, softening as it spreads. The cast shadow is what anchors the vessel - without it the thing floats no matter how well you shaded it.

Πρόσεχε. A detached grey blob nearby.

Έλεγχος The shadow should touch the base.

  12. Βήμα 12

Strengthen what stays, erase what does not.

Weight the rim and the silhouette, erase the eye-level guide, and check the two ellipses one last time - they are what the whole drawing stands on.

Πρόσεχε. Leaving the eye-level line in.

Έλεγχος Rim and silhouette should be the darkest lines.

The finished drawing of a bottle with the construction lines erased

Τι σου μαθαίνει αυτό;

The skill underneath is symmetry about an axis: both sides of the profile have to match, and checking beats hoping.

The bottle stacks two cylinders and makes you negotiate the join, which is most of drawing man-made objects: forms meeting through curves. The label is the mug's wrap-around grid lesson at half the effort.

Τι χρειάζεσαι;

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

Αν πάει στραβά...

If it looks like a rocket, the shoulders are straight diagonals. They are S-curves - out from the neck, over, and down into the body's side without a corner anywhere.

If the neck looks grafted on, its sides are not parallel: a bottle neck is a true cylinder, and any taper reads as a vase.

If the label floats, its top and bottom edges must curve with the body - two shallow arcs matching the base ellipse, never straight lines.

Ερωτήσεις που κάνουν οι άνθρωποι

How do I draw a bottle's shoulders?
As two mirrored S-curves flowing from neck into body with no corner anywhere. Straight diagonal shoulders are what make drawn bottles look like rockets.
How do I draw a label on a bottle?
Top and bottom edges as shallow arcs that match the base ellipse's curve. A straight-edged label sits ON the drawing instead of wrapping the form.
Should a bottle's neck taper?
No - it is a true cylinder with parallel sides. Taper belongs to the shoulder below it; a tapering neck reads as a vase.
Can I draw a bottle on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - print the step sheet and draw beside it. The ellipse practice actually benefits from paper, where your whole arm is free, and a photo of the page gets measured exactly like a canvas drawing.
How do I draw the top of a bottle?
As one fast ellipse, going round several times and keeping the best pass. Its roundness depends on your eye level - decide that first.
Why does my bottle look like it is tipping over?
The base ellipse disagrees with the rim. The base is always slightly ROUNDER than the rim, never flatter, and both must be the same width.
Can a beginner draw a bottle?
Yes, and it is worth it - the ellipse practice transfers directly to wheels, plates, hats and eyes. There is a finish-early step partway through.
How do I shade a bottle?
Vertically, following the form, darkest just inside the shadow edge with a thin light strip at the very edge - that strip is what makes it read as round.
What is the hardest part of drawing a bottle?
The two ellipses agreeing with each other. Everything else is forgiving; the rim and base are what the eye checks first.
