Riguardo questo disegno

A jar is the vessel construction with training wheels: the sides are straight and nearly vertical, the rim and base are almost the same width, and the screw lid is just a shallow cylinder sitting on top. It exists on this site as the place to practise the two-ellipse discipline before the curves of the vase demand it.

Like everything hollow on this site, it is two ellipses and a profile: the rim, the base, and the sides that join them.

Passo dopo passo

  1. Passo 1

Put in the eye-level line first.

Everything about the ellipses follows from where your eye is. Decide now, consciously, and mark it - letting it drift mid-drawing is how the rim and base end up disagreeing.

Attenzione Not deciding, then drawing contradictory ellipses.

Controlla You should be able to say if you are above or level with the rim.

  2. Passo 2

Draw the rim ellipse, going round several times.

Round three or four times in one fast continuous motion and keep the best pass. Speed is what makes an ellipse smooth - drawn slowly it lumps on one side every time.

Attenzione Building the ellipse from four careful arcs.

Controlla The rim should be symmetrical about its long axis.

  3. Passo 3

Run the sides down from the rim.

Start each side exactly at the widest point of the rim ellipse. A step where side meets rim is instantly visible and almost impossible to hide later.

Attenzione Sides starting inside or outside the rim's ends.

Controlla Each side should leave the rim at its widest point.

  4. Passo 4

    Draw the base curve.

The base is further from your eye than the rim, so it is ROUNDER - same width, more curve. Getting this backwards is what makes vessels look like they are sliding off the table.

Attenzione A base flatter than the rim, or a straight line.

Controlla The base curve should be rounder than the rim.

  5. Passo 5

    Add the inner rim line.

One curve just inside the rim gives the material its thickness and turns the top from a painted disc into an opening. It follows the rim's curve, not parallel all the way round.

Attenzione Skipping it, leaving a flat disc on top.

Controlla A visible band should separate the two curves at the front.

  6. Passo 6

Add the neck of the jar.

Where the profile changes is where the form lives. Draw the change on both sides at the same height - a shoulder at two heights makes the whole vessel lean.

Attenzione The profile changing at different heights left and right.

Controlla Both sides should change shape at the same height.

  7. Passo 7

    Add the handle or spout.

Both ends must touch the body - a floating handle is the most common error on any vessel. And it is a strap with thickness, never a single line.

Attenzione A handle drawn as one wire line, or floating.

Controlla Both handle ends should touch the vessel's side.

  8. Passo 8

Add the details that say jar.

The identifying details go on last and they follow the form - a label, a pattern or a spout curves with the surface it sits on.

Attenzione Flat detail pasted over a round form.

Controlla Any pattern should bend with the body.

  9. Passo 9

Shade the side away from the light.

A cylinder's darkest band sits just INSIDE the shadow edge, not at it. Lay the strokes vertically, following the form, and build up in passes.

Attenzione Scrubbing horizontal tone across a vertical form.

Controlla The darkest band should sit inside the outline.

  10. Passo 10

Leave the very edge lighter than the band inside it.

Light bounces off the table back onto the very edge, so leave a thin lighter strip at the outline. That strip is what makes the form read as round rather than flat-shaded.

Attenzione Shading right up to the edge.

Controlla A light strip should separate shading from outline.

  11. Passo 11

    Draw the shadow underneath.

Darkest where it touches the base, softening as it spreads. The cast shadow is what anchors the vessel - without it the thing floats no matter how well you shaded it.

Attenzione A detached grey blob nearby.

Controlla The shadow should touch the base.

  12. Passo 12

Strengthen what stays, erase what does not.

Weight the rim and the silhouette, erase the eye-level guide, and check the two ellipses one last time - they are what the whole drawing stands on.

Attenzione Leaving the eye-level line in.

Controlla Rim and silhouette should be the darkest lines.

The finished drawing of a jar with the construction lines erased

This is an ellipse lesson wearing a household object. The rim and base must agree about your eye level, and learning to make them agree fixes wheels, plates and hats at the same time.

The jar is deliberately the vessel family's easiest member: with the profile reduced to two straight lines, everything rides on the ellipse pair - which is exactly the skill worth isolating before attempting anything with a curve.

Cosa ti serve?

A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.

Se sta andando male

If it looks off and you cannot say why, the two ellipses disagree: the base must be slightly ROUNDER than the rim - on a jar this is the whole game, because nothing else can go wrong.

If the lid reads as a disc, it needs sides: two short verticals under its ellipse, making it a shallow cylinder rather than a plate.

If the glass is not reading, add one vertical highlight line down a side and something visible inside - three circles suggest contents and the wall becomes transparent.

Domande che la gente chiede

How do I make a jar look like glass?
One vertical highlight line down the side and something drawn inside it - a few circles are enough. Contents behind the wall is what says transparent.
How do I draw a jar's screw lid?
A shallow cylinder: its own ellipse slightly wider than the jar's rim, with two short vertical sides. A lone ellipse reads as a plate balanced on top.
Why do drawn jars look wrong so often?
The base ellipse. It must be slightly rounder than the rim - it is further from your eye - and on a straight-sided jar that one relationship is the entire drawing.
Can I draw a jar on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - print the step sheet and draw beside it. The ellipse practice actually benefits from paper, where your whole arm is free, and a photo of the page gets measured exactly like a canvas drawing.
How do I draw the top of a jar?
As one fast ellipse, going round several times and keeping the best pass. Its roundness depends on your eye level - decide that first.
Why does my jar look like it is tipping over?
The base ellipse disagrees with the rim. The base is always slightly ROUNDER than the rim, never flatter, and both must be the same width.
Can a beginner draw a jar?
Yes, and it is worth it - the ellipse practice transfers directly to wheels, plates, hats and eyes. There is a finish-early step partway through.
How do I shade a jar?
Vertically, following the form, darkest just inside the shadow edge with a thin light strip at the very edge - that strip is what makes it read as round.
What is the hardest part of drawing a jar?
The two ellipses agreeing with each other. Everything else is forgiving; the rim and base are what the eye checks first.
