It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

Over deze tekening

A pumpkin is a sphere divided into segments, and the segment lines are the whole lesson: each one is a curve that bulges with the form, closer together at the edges than in the middle - exactly the behaviour of lines on any sphere, made visible. It is a globe with a stem, and drawing one teaches the other.

The build is the standard solid one - one oval, a corrected silhouette, then shading with a committed light direction.

Stap voor stap

  1. Stap 1

Draw one oval and nothing else yet.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

Kijk uit. Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

Ophalen It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. Stap 2

Push the outline in and out.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

Kijk uit. Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

Ophalen The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. Stap 3

Draw a cross through the middle.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

Kijk uit. Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

Ophalen The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. Stap 4

Draw the top of the pumpkin.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

Kijk uit. Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

Ophalen The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. Stap 5

Draw the depression at the top.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

Kijk uit. Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

Ophalen The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. Stap 6

Set the light and note it in the corner.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

Kijk uit. Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

Ophalen You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. Stap 7

Add tone on the shadow side.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

Kijk uit. Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

Ophalen The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. Stap 8

Keep the very edge lighter than the band inside it.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

Kijk uit. Running the shading tight to the outline.

Ophalen A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. Stap 9

    Add the bright spot.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

Kijk uit. A large or doubled highlight.

Ophalen The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. Stap 10

    Draw the pumpkin surface.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

Kijk uit. Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

Ophalen Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. Stap 11

    Draw the shadow underneath.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

Kijk uit. An even grey puddle not touching the object.

Ophalen The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. Stap 12

Strengthen what stays and erase the guides.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    Kijk uit. Equal weight everywhere.

Ophalen Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

The finished drawing of a pumpkin with the construction lines erased

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The pumpkin is the site's contour-line lesson in costume: the segment lines are longitude lines on a globe, spacing and curvature doing exactly what the mug's grid did on a cylinder - describing the form by lying on it.

Wat je nodig hebt.

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

Als het misgaat.

If it looks striped rather than segmented, the lines are too straight: every segment line bows outward with the body, nearly touching the outline's curve at top and bottom.

If it looks like a beach ball, squash it: a pumpkin is wider than tall, sits flat, and its outline dents in slightly at the top around the stem.

If the stem is wrong, it is too thin and too straight - a pumpkin stem is a thick, curved, five-sided stump that leans.

Vragen die mensen stellen

How do I draw a pumpkin's segments?
As curves that bulge with the body - furthest apart at the equator, converging toward stem and base, like longitude lines on a globe. Straight lines read as stripes.
What shape is a pumpkin overall?
Wider than it is tall, slightly dented at the top around the stem, sitting flat on the ground. A round pumpkin is a beach ball.
How do I draw a pumpkin's stem?
Thick, curved and stumpy, leaning to one side, with a hint of its five-sided ridges. A thin straight stem is an apple's, and it breaks the scale.
Can I draw a pumpkin on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a pumpkin?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a pumpkin?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my pumpkin look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a pumpkin?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a pumpkin need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
