关于此绘图

A bucket is the vessel construction turned upside down in one respect: it is WIDER at the top than the bottom, the only common object with that taper, and getting the direction right is half the drawing. The other half is the handle - a single arc from rim to rim that has to clear the bucket's own opening.

Like everything hollow on this site, it is two ellipses and a profile: the rim, the base, and the sides that join them.

一步

  1. 步 1

Mark eye level - everything follows from it.

Everything about the ellipses follows from where your eye is. Decide now, consciously, and mark it - letting it drift mid-drawing is how the rim and base end up disagreeing.

小心 Not deciding, then drawing contradictory ellipses.

检查支票 You should be able to say if you are above or level with the rim.

  2. 步 2

Draw the top ellipse in one motion.

Round three or four times in one fast continuous motion and keep the best pass. Speed is what makes an ellipse smooth - drawn slowly it lumps on one side every time.

小心 Building the ellipse from four careful arcs.

检查支票 The rim should be symmetrical about its long axis.

  3. 步 3

Add the two sides of the bucket.

Start each side exactly at the widest point of the rim ellipse. A step where side meets rim is instantly visible and almost impossible to hide later.

小心 Sides starting inside or outside the rim's ends.

检查支票 Each side should leave the rim at its widest point.

  4. 步 4

Add the base - rounder than the rim.

The base is further from your eye than the rim, so it is ROUNDER - same width, more curve. Getting this backwards is what makes vessels look like they are sliding off the table.

小心 A base flatter than the rim, or a straight line.

检查支票 The base curve should be rounder than the rim.

  5. 步 5

Add a second curve inside the rim.

One curve just inside the rim gives the material its thickness and turns the top from a painted disc into an opening. It follows the rim's curve, not parallel all the way round.

小心 Skipping it, leaving a flat disc on top.

检查支票 A visible band should separate the two curves at the front.

  6. 步 6

    Put the shoulder curve in.

Where the profile changes is where the form lives. Draw the change on both sides at the same height - a shoulder at two heights makes the whole vessel lean.

小心 The profile changing at different heights left and right.

检查支票 Both sides should change shape at the same height.

  7. 步 7

    Add the handle or spout.

Both ends must touch the body - a floating handle is the most common error on any vessel. And it is a strap with thickness, never a single line.

小心 A handle drawn as one wire line, or floating.

检查支票 Both handle ends should touch the vessel's side.

  8. 步 8

Finish the shape with the bucket details.

The identifying details go on last and they follow the form - a label, a pattern or a spout curves with the surface it sits on.

小心 Flat detail pasted over a round form.

检查支票 Any pattern should bend with the body.

  9. 步 9

    Add tone down one side.

A cylinder's darkest band sits just INSIDE the shadow edge, not at it. Lay the strokes vertically, following the form, and build up in passes.

小心 Scrubbing horizontal tone across a vertical form.

检查支票 The darkest band should sit inside the outline.

  10. 步 10

    Put the reflected light in.

Light bounces off the table back onto the very edge, so leave a thin lighter strip at the outline. That strip is what makes the form read as round rather than flat-shaded.

小心 Shading right up to the edge.

检查支票 A light strip should separate shading from outline.

  11. 步 11

Add the shadow on the table.

Darkest where it touches the base, softening as it spreads. The cast shadow is what anchors the vessel - without it the thing floats no matter how well you shaded it.

小心 A detached grey blob nearby.

检查支票 The shadow should touch the base.

  12. 步 12

Darken the final lines and clear the rest.

Weight the rim and the silhouette, erase the eye-level guide, and check the two ellipses one last time - they are what the whole drawing stands on.

小心 Leaving the eye-level line in.

检查支票 Rim and silhouette should be the darkest lines.

这一个教了你什么

This is an ellipse lesson wearing a household object. The rim and base must agree about your eye level, and learning to make them agree fixes wheels, plates and hats at the same time.

The bucket flips the family's usual taper, which makes it a check on whether the construction is understood or memorised: same ellipses, same profile logic, opposite direction. The pivot dots are a first hinge - a part that moves.

你需要的东西

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

如果出错

If it looks like a flowerpot, the handle is missing - the same tapering cylinder IS a flowerpot, and the swinging handle with its two pivot dots is the entire difference.

If the handle looks flat, its arc is too shallow: swung upright it stands a full bucket-height above the rim; at rest it hangs against the side.

If the taper looks wrong, it is probably too strong. A bucket narrows gently - the base about two-thirds of the rim's width - and past that it becomes a cone.

人们对人们提出的问题

Which way does a bucket taper?
Wider at the top, narrower at the base - the reverse of nearly everything else you will draw. The base is about two-thirds of the rim's width.
How do I draw a bucket's handle?
One arc from rim to rim, attached at a small circle each side - the pivots. Upright it stands a full bucket-height over the rim; resting it lies against the side.
Why does my bucket look like a flowerpot?
No handle. The tapering cylinder is identical - the swinging handle and its two pivot dots are the whole difference between the objects.
Can I draw a bucket on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes - print the step sheet and draw beside it. The ellipse practice actually benefits from paper, where your whole arm is free, and a photo of the page gets measured exactly like a canvas drawing.
How do I draw the top of a bucket?
As one fast ellipse, going round several times and keeping the best pass. Its roundness depends on your eye level - decide that first.
Why does my bucket look like it is tipping over?
The base ellipse disagrees with the rim. The base is always slightly ROUNDER than the rim, never flatter, and both must be the same width.
Can a beginner draw a bucket?
Yes, and it is worth it - the ellipse practice transfers directly to wheels, plates, hats and eyes. There is a finish-early step partway through.
How do I shade a bucket?
Vertically, following the form, darkest just inside the shadow edge with a thin light strip at the very edge - that strip is what makes it read as round.
What is the hardest part of drawing a bucket?
The two ellipses agreeing with each other. Everything else is forgiving; the rim and base are what the eye checks first.
