How to Draw an Egg
1 / 12
Start with one oval for the whole egg.
It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.
Дар ҷои он дар коғаз кашида шавад?

Дар бораи ин тасвирот
An egg is the value exercise with nowhere to hide: no texture, no features, no colour - just one smooth form and the light on it. Every atelier on earth sets this exact subject in week one, because if the egg does not look round, nothing you add to any other drawing will fix the same problem there.
Like every simple form on this site, it is one mass plus value: block it in, break the outline where the real thing does, then let light do the rest.

Қадам 1
Start with one oval for the whole egg.
One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.
Диққат Building the mass from many small safe strokes.
& Озмоиш It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.
-
Қадам 2
Push the outline in and out.
Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.
Диққат Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.
& Озмоиш The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.
-
Қадам 3
Draw a cross through the middle.
Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.
Диққат Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.
& Озмоиш The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.
-
Қадам 4
Add the stalk.
Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.
Диққат Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.
& Озмоиш The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.
-
Қадам 5
Add the hollow around the stalk.
The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.
Диққат Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.
& Озмоиш The dip should curve, not sit flat.
-
Қадам 6
Pick a light direction and commit.
Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.
Диққат Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.
& Озмоиш You should be able to point at the light source.
-
Қадам 7
Shade the dark half.
Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.
Диққат Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.
& Озмоиш The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.
-
Қадам 8
Put the reflected light in at the edge.
Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.
Диққат Running the shading tight to the outline.
& Озмоиш A lighter line should separate shading from edge.
-
Қадам 9
Add the bright spot.
One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.
Диққат A large or doubled highlight.
& Озмоиш The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.
-
Қадам 10
Put in the egg markings.
Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.
Диққат Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.
& Озмоиш Marks should bend with the surface.
-
Қадам 11
Add the shadow it sits in.
Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.
Диққат An even grey puddle not touching the object.
& Озмоиш The shadow should touch the object's base.
-
Қадам 12
Darken the keepers and clear the rest.
Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.
Диққат Equal weight everywhere.
& Озмоиш Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

What transfers is the standard light kit - core shadow inside the edge, bounced light at it, one small highlight, a cast shadow that anchors. Every shaded form you ever draw uses all four.
The egg is the solid family's control experiment: with every identifying feature removed, whatever is wrong with the drawing is wrong with the shading. It is the fastest honest diagnostic on the site - eight minutes, and the result tells you exactly which value habit to fix.

Ба шумо чӣ лозим аст
A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.
Агар хатогӣ рӯй диҳад
If it looks like an oval, not an egg, the two ends match: an egg is asymmetric - one end visibly blunter, one narrower - and that asymmetry is the entire outline.
If it looks flat, the core shadow is missing: the darkest band sits INSIDE the shadow edge, curved with the form, with bounced light between it and the outline.
If it looks pasted on the page, the cast shadow is wrong: it hugs the egg at the contact point, darkest there, and stretches away from the light source, softening.

Саволҳои маъмул
- Why draw an egg at all?
- Because it is shading with nowhere to hide - no texture or feature can rescue it. Ateliers set it in week one for exactly that reason, and it diagnoses your value habits in eight minutes.
- What shape is an egg exactly?
- An asymmetric oval: one end blunter, one narrower. If the two ends match you have drawn an ellipse, and the asymmetry is the entire outline.
- Where is the darkest part of an egg?
- The core shadow - a curved band INSIDE the shadow edge, not at the outline. Between it and the edge sits the bounced light that makes the form turn.
- Can I draw an egg on paper instead of the canvas?
- Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
- How do I start drawing an egg?
- One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
- How do I shade an egg?
- Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
- Why does my egg look flat?
- Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
- Can a beginner draw an egg?
- Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
- Does an egg need a cast shadow?
- Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
