A mushroom is a dome on a cylinder, which makes it the one food that is really an architecture lesson: the cap overhangs the stem all the way round, casting the stem into shadow, and the gills radiate along the cap's underside like the ribs of an umbrella. It is a lamp, drawn from under the shade.

Underneath, this is a single shaded mass like the apple; the subject lives in the silhouette and the surface marks.

Adım adım

  1. _Daşarky 1

Start with one oval for the whole mushroom.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

Gözleg Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

Barla It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. _Daşarky 2

Vary the outline so it stops looking geometric.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

Gözleg Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

Barla The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. _Daşarky 3

Mark the centre with two light lines.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

Gözleg Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

Barla The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. _Daşarky 4

Draw the top of the mushroom.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

Gözleg Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

Barla The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. _Daşarky 5

    Draw the top hollow.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

Gözleg Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

Barla The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. _Daşarky 6

    Choose the light direction.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

Gözleg Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

Barla You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. _Daşarky 7

    Shade the dark half.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

Gözleg Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

Barla The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. _Daşarky 8

Leave a light strip at the shadow edge.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

Gözleg Running the shading tight to the outline.

Barla A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. _Daşarky 9

Put one small highlight on the lit side.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

Gözleg A large or doubled highlight.

Barla The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. _Daşarky 10

    Draw the mushroom surface.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

Gözleg Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

Barla Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. _Daşarky 11

    Add the cast shadow.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

Gözleg An even grey puddle not touching the object.

Barla The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. _Daşarky 12

Strengthen what stays and erase the guides.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    Gözleg Equal weight everywhere.

Barla Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The mushroom is the family's first self-shadowing form - one part casting shade on another. The stem darkening under the cap is the same logic as the nose's shadow on the lip, met here on a subject with no likeness to protect.

A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.

If the cap looks stuck on, the underside is missing: the cap's lower edge is a visible curve, and the gill lines hang from it, converging toward the stem.

If it looks like a nail, the stem is too thin - a mushroom's stem is stout, between a third and half the cap's width, and it thickens slightly at the ground.

If it floats, the stem's shadow is missing: the cap overhangs, so the top of the stem is always in shade, darkest right under the cap.

Adamlar soraýan soraglar

How do I draw mushroom gills?
As short lines hanging from the cap's underside curve, converging toward the stem - umbrella ribs seen from below. Five or six read as fifty.
How thick should a mushroom stem be?
Stout - a third to half the cap's width, thickening slightly at the base. A thin stem turns the mushroom into a nail.
Why is the top of the stem dark?
The cap overhangs it all the way round, so the stem stands in the cap's shadow - darkest right under it. Draw that and the two parts lock together.
Can I draw a mushroom on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a mushroom?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a mushroom?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my mushroom look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a mushroom?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a mushroom need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
