How to Draw Nature

Plants and landscapes are where drawing stops being about copying an outline and starts being about deciding what to leave out. A tree has two hundred thousand leaves and you are going to draw about forty marks.

These lessons teach that judgement directly: build the mass, detail only the silhouette, and let the viewer's eye supply the rest. It supplies it every time, and the drawings come out looking more convincing than the ones where somebody tried to draw every leaf.
