What this drill trains

When somebody says a drawing looks off but cannot say why, it is usually proportion - the parts disagreeing with each other about how big the thing is. This is the single most common reason a drawing fails, and it is also the most fixable, because it is measurement rather than anything innate.

The method is comparison, and it has a name: sight measuring, the technique of holding a pencil at arm's length and using it as a ruler against the subject. You never judge a length in the abstract - you judge it against a length already on the page that you trust. Half of that. Twice that. The same as the gap beside it.

Working that way keeps errors local. Judge everything independently and each small mistake compounds with the next until the whole drawing is subtly wrong in a way you cannot locate; judge everything against one trusted measurement and a mistake stays where you made it.

How to do it

  1. Pick one measurement in the subject and call it your unit - usually the biggest reliable one, like the height of a head or the width of a mug.
  2. Draw it first, and draw it big. Everything else is measured against it, so an error here scales into everything.
  3. For every new length, say out loud what it is relative to the unit before you draw it. Half. A third. Twice. Saying it forces a decision instead of a guess.
  4. Draw it, then check immediately by holding a pencil against the drawing. Guessing without checking builds nothing at all.
  5. When you are wrong, note by how much rather than just fixing it. Most people are consistently wrong in one direction, and knowing which one is worth more than any single correction.
  6. Check the negative shapes - the gaps - as well as the objects. A gap has no name, so your brain has no opinion about how big it should be, which makes it far easier to judge honestly.

What good looks like

In a well-proportioned drawing the relationships hold even when the individual shapes are rough. The classic proof is to turn the drawing upside down beside the reference: proportion errors leap out, because rotating stops your brain recognising the object and forces it to compare shapes.

Both lines were meant to be divided in half. The lower one is off by about a quarter, which is roughly the error most beginners make on a first attempt and roughly the error that makes a face stop looking like a person.

What we measure, and what the number means

This drill scores proportion: whether the parts of what you drew agree with each other and with the target. The measurement is the ratio between the lengths you produced and the lengths you were asked for, so a drawing that is uniformly too large scores well - scale is not an error, disagreement is.

The session also records the direction of your bias, because most people are consistently wrong the same way. Knowing that you habitually make second halves too short is worth more than any single corrected drawing.

Where a target has no unambiguous length - a freehand curve, say - it is excluded from the score rather than estimated. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than no number.

Every subject where you already know what the thing looks like, because that knowledge is exactly what overrides the measurement. Faces and animals are the worst offenders.

Where it usually goes wrong

Judging by feel instead of comparing. Feel is exactly the faculty that is wrong, and it is wrong most on the subjects you know best.

Starting small. A shape drawn too small leaves no room to be wrong in, and every subsequent measurement inherits its error.

Fixing a proportion by adjusting the newest mark. If two things disagree, one of them is the trusted unit and the other moves - decide which before you erase anything.

Checking heights but never widths. Widths carry more of the likeness in a face than heights do, and almost nobody checks them.

Questions about proportion

Why does my drawing look off when every part looks right?
Because the parts are right individually and wrong relative to each other. That is proportion, and it is the most common single cause of a drawing that nobody can quite diagnose.
What is sight measuring?
Holding a pencil at arm's length with your arm locked, marking a length on it with your thumb, and using that as a unit to compare other lengths in the subject.
Do I have to use a pencil to measure?
Any straight object works, and after a few weeks you will do most of it by eye. The pencil is training wheels, not a permanent method.
Is proportion just talent?
No, and this is the skill most often mistaken for it. It is comparison, it is trainable, and it improves faster when you check every judgment immediately than when you draw for hours without checking.
Why does turning the drawing upside down help?
Rotating it stops your brain recognising the object, so it stops supplying what it expects and starts comparing shapes. Errors that were invisible become obvious immediately.
How long does this take to improve?
Longer than line confidence - think months rather than weeks - but it improves permanently once it does, because it is a habit rather than a motor skill.
