이 그림에 대해

A robin is the standard small bird - egg, round head, stubby beak - plus exactly one feature: the red breast, which is not a patch on the chest but a bib that runs from the face down. It is the perfect first bird because everything about it is the default.

Underneath the feathers this is an egg with a head, like every bird on the site; the species lives in the beak, the tilt and the markings.

단계별로

  1. 단계 1

Draw one oval for the whole body of the robin.

Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.

조심해 Building the body from several small arcs.

체크 The body should be one smooth closed shape.

  2. 단계 2

Place a small circle for the skull.

Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.

조심해 An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.

체크 About four head-widths should fit along the body.

  3. 단계 3

Build the neck with a curve each side.

Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.

조심해 Leaving the head disconnected from the body.

체크 Both neck curves should touch head and body.

  4. 단계 4

Put the beak on, and get its angle right.

The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.

조심해 Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.

체크 The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.

  5. 단계 5

Draw the eye, then fill the pupil.

A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.

조심해 Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.

체크 The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.

  6. 단계 6

Draw the wing over the body.

The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.

조심해 Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.

체크 The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.

  7. 단계 7

    Add the wing feather divisions.

Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.

조심해 Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.

체크 You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.

  8. 단계 8

Place the legs under the body, toward the rear.

Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.

조심해 Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.

체크 The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.

  9. 단계 9

    Draw the tail.

The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.

조심해 A tail at war with the angle of the body.

체크 The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.

  10. 단계 10

Draw the underside of the robin.

The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.

조심해 A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.

체크 The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.

  11. 단계 11

Draw the pattern this bird actually has.

Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.

조심해 Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.

체크 Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.

  12. 단계 12

Texture the breast lightly, curving with the body.

Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.

조심해 Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.

체크 The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.

  13. 단계 13

Anchor the bird: ground line, then shadow.

One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.

조심해 Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.

체크 The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.

  14. 단계 14

Firm up the keepers, remove the guides.

Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.

조심해 Uniform line weight over the whole bird.

체크 Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

이 책이 실제로 가르치는 것은

The skill underneath is placement against a mass: every feature reads relative to the egg, so the egg has to be right first. That order - mass, then features - is the whole method.

The robin is the reference implementation of the small bird: every default of the egg-and-head build used without exception. Draw it first, and every other bird on the site becomes a short list of differences from the one you already know.

필요한 것

A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.

잘못된 일이 생기면

If it looks like a sparrow, the bib boundary is missing. The red runs from around the beak down over the chest, and its EDGE is what you draw - one curve from cheek to belly.

If it looks stiff, the head is centred on the body. A robin's head sits forward of the body's axis, giving the alert lean every small bird has.

If the proportions drift, check the beak: a robin's is short and thin - any longer and the bird becomes a thrush.

사람들이 묻는 질문

How do I draw a robin's red breast?
As a boundary, not a patch: one curve from the cheek down around the chest, marking where the red meets the brown. Shade inside it lightly and the bib reads.
What is the easiest bird to draw?
This one. A robin is the default small bird - egg body, round head, stubby beak - with a single marking. Eight minutes, honestly.
How do I make my robin look alert?
Set the head forward of the body's centre line and tip the whole body slightly forward on the legs. Alertness is posture, not eye detail.
How do I start drawing a robin?
With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
Where do the legs go on a robin?
Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
How do I draw the feathers on a robin?
As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
Can a beginner draw a robin?
Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
What size should the head be on a robin?
Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
