Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.

The body should be one smooth closed shape.

Over deze tekening

A crow is the robin's build with every softness removed: the beak is a heavy straight dagger nearly as long as the head, with a feathered bristle patch where it meets the face; the posture is upright and deliberate; and since the whole bird is one value, the drawing survives on silhouette and sheen alone.

Underneath the feathers this is an egg with a head, like every bird on the site; the species lives in the beak, the tilt and the markings.

Stap voor stap

  1. Stap 1

Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.

Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.

Kijk uit. Building the body from several small arcs.

Ophalen The body should be one smooth closed shape.

  2. Stap 2

Place the head - much smaller than you think.

Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.

Kijk uit. An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.

Ophalen About four head-widths should fit along the body.

  3. Stap 3

Draw the neck on both sides.

Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.

Kijk uit. Leaving the head disconnected from the body.

Ophalen Both neck curves should touch head and body.

  4. Stap 4

    Add the beak.

The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.

Kijk uit. Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.

Ophalen The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.

  5. Stap 5

Put the eye in, high and forward.

A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.

Kijk uit. Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.

Ophalen The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.

  6. Stap 6

Add the wing shape across the side.

The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.

Kijk uit. Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.

Ophalen The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.

  7. Stap 7

    Mark the layers of feathers.

Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.

Kijk uit. Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.

Ophalen You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.

  8. Stap 8

Draw the legs, set well back under the body.

Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.

Kijk uit. Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.

Ophalen The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.

  9. Stap 9

Draw the tail as one shape, not separate feathers.

The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.

Kijk uit. A tail at war with the angle of the body.

Ophalen The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.

  10. Stap 10

    Shape the chest and underside.

The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.

Kijk uit. A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.

Ophalen The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.

  11. Stap 11

Draw the pattern this bird actually has.

Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.

Kijk uit. Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.

Ophalen Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.

  12. Stap 12

Suggest the breast feathers - three or four V-marks.

Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.

Kijk uit. Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.

Ophalen The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.

  13. Stap 13

Put the surface in, and the shadow under the body.

One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.

Kijk uit. Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.

Ophalen The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.

  14. Stap 14

Press harder on the final lines and erase the blocking-in.

Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.

Kijk uit. Uniform line weight over the whole bird.

Ophalen Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

The finished drawing of a crow with the construction lines erased

This is an attachment lesson: wing over body, beak out of skull, legs further back than they look. Everything on a bird overlaps something, and overlap is the cheapest depth cue in drawing.

The crow is the bird family's value problem: an all-black subject that still needs form, solved the beetle's way with reserved sheen. One subject, one value, and the drawing still has to turn.

Wat je nodig hebt.

A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.

Als het misgaat.

If it reads as a blackbird, scale the beak up: a crow's is nearly head-length, deep and straight, with feather bristles covering its base.

If the black kills the form, use the beetle rule: leave one hard sheen streak along the wing and one on the head, and let the rest go genuinely dark.

If it looks timid, straighten it: crows stand tall and level, head up, tail horizontal - the hunched sneaky pose is a cartoon's, not the bird's.

Vragen die mensen stellen

How do I draw a bird that is all black?
Go genuinely dark and reserve two hard sheen streaks - one along the wing, one on the head. Form in an all-black subject lives entirely in what you leave light.
How big is a crow's beak?
Nearly as long as the head, deep and straight like a dagger, with a bristle patch of feathers covering its base. A small neat beak makes it a blackbird.
What posture does a crow have?
Upright and deliberate - standing tall, head up, tail level. The hunched sneak belongs to cartoons; real crows carry themselves like they own the ground.
How do I start drawing a crow?
With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
Where do the legs go on a crow?
Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
How do I draw the feathers on a crow?
As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
Can a beginner draw a crow?
Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
What size should the head be on a crow?
Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
