How to Draw a Crow
1 / 14
Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.
The body should be one smooth closed shape.

О овом цртежу
A crow is the robin's build with every softness removed: the beak is a heavy straight dagger nearly as long as the head, with a feathered bristle patch where it meets the face; the posture is upright and deliberate; and since the whole bird is one value, the drawing survives on silhouette and sheen alone.
Underneath the feathers this is an egg with a head, like every bird on the site; the species lives in the beak, the tilt and the markings.
Корак по корак

Корак 1
Start with the body - an egg, tipped forward.
Nearly every bird is one egg-shaped mass with everything else attached to it. Draw the egg in one motion and let its tilt say what the bird is doing.
Пази. Building the body from several small arcs.
Пров› јери The body should be one smooth closed shape.
-
Корак 2
Place the head - much smaller than you think.
Bird heads are smaller relative to the body than beginners expect - usually about a quarter of the body length. Measure against the egg before you commit.
Пази. An oversized head, which turns the bird into a cartoon.
Пров› јери About four head-widths should fit along the body.
-
Корак 3
Draw the neck on both sides.
Even a short-necked bird has a neck: two curves joining head to body, front and back. Without them the head floats and the bird reads as a snowman.
Пази. Leaving the head disconnected from the body.
Пров› јери Both neck curves should touch head and body.
-
Корак 4
Add the beak.
The beak grows out of the skull rather than sitting on its surface, and its angle continues the line of the head. Shape and size are the strongest species cues on the whole bird.
Пази. Sticking the beak flat onto the front of the circle.
Пров› јери The top edge of the beak should line up with the skull.
-
Корак 5
Put the eye in, high and forward.
A bird's eye sits high and close to the beak. Small, dark, with one highlight - and its position matters far more than its rendering.
Пази. Placing the eye centrally, which deadens the whole face.
Пров› јери The eye should be nearer the beak than the back of the head.
-
Корак 6
Add the wing shape across the side.
The folded wing lies ON the body, crossing its outline. That overlap is what attaches it - a wing drawn inside the body outline reads as a pattern, not a limb.
Пази. Drawing the wing floating inside the silhouette.
Пров› јери The wing should cross the body outline somewhere.
-
Корак 7
Mark the layers of feathers.
Feathers come in groups, and the groups are what you draw - two or three curved rows, not individual feathers. The eye supplies the rest reliably.
Пази. Drawing every feather, which turns the wing into a fence.
Пров› јери You should count feather GROUPS, not feathers.
-
Корак 8
Draw the legs, set well back under the body.
Legs attach much further back than they appear to, because the visible leg is really the bird's foot and ankle. Get the attachment point right and the balance follows.
Пази. Legs planted centrally, which makes the bird tip forward.
Пров› јери The legs should attach behind the middle of the egg.
-
Корак 9
Draw the tail as one shape, not separate feathers.
The tail continues the body's line rather than being stuck on the end. Draw it as one shape - separate feathers come last if at all.
Пази. A tail at war with the angle of the body.
Пров› јери The tail's top edge should flow from the back line.
-
Корак 10
Shape the chest and underside.
The breast is the fullest curve on the bird and it carries the pose. Round it generously - a flat chest makes any bird look deflated.
Пази. A flat front, which loses the bird's volume.
Пров› јери The chest should be the roundest curve on the drawing.
-
Корак 11
Draw the pattern this bird actually has.
Markings follow the body's form - they curve as the body curves. Flat pattern drawn over a round form cancels all the volume you just built.
Пази. Drawing the pattern flat, ignoring the curve underneath.
Пров› јери Any stripe or patch should bend with the body.
-
Корак 12
Suggest the breast feathers - three or four V-marks.
Three or four short V-marks down the breast, each curving with the chest rather than sitting flat, and the whole bird reads as feathered. They also confirm the body's roundness - marks on a form must bend with it, which is the same rule as every stripe and patch on the site.
Пази. Covering the breast evenly, which turns the bird into a pinecone.
Пров› јери The marks should bend the same way as the chest outline.
-
Корак 13
Put the surface in, and the shadow under the body.
One line under the feet and one flattened shadow arc beneath the body, darkest between the legs. A bird with no ground floats in white space no matter how well it is built - and the shadow also confirms where the legs actually are, which birds hide well.
Пази. Skipping it and leaving the bird hovering.
Пров› јери The shadow should sit directly below the body's widest point.
-
Корак 14
Press harder on the final lines and erase the blocking-in.
Weight the silhouette and the beak, keep the feather marks light, erase the construction. The contrast in line weight is what separates finished from traced.
Пази. Uniform line weight over the whole bird.
Пров› јери Silhouette darker than interior - check by squinting.

Шта те овај заправо учи
This is an attachment lesson: wing over body, beak out of skull, legs further back than they look. Everything on a bird overlaps something, and overlap is the cheapest depth cue in drawing.
The crow is the bird family's value problem: an all-black subject that still needs form, solved the beetle's way with reserved sheen. One subject, one value, and the drawing still has to turn.

Шта ти треба
A pencil, kept light until the last step, and an eraser you will actually use. The construction is deliberately drawn to be removed.
Ако иде наопако
If it reads as a blackbird, scale the beak up: a crow's is nearly head-length, deep and straight, with feather bristles covering its base.
If the black kills the form, use the beetle rule: leave one hard sheen streak along the wing and one on the head, and let the rest go genuinely dark.
If it looks timid, straighten it: crows stand tall and level, head up, tail horizontal - the hunched sneaky pose is a cartoon's, not the bird's.

Питања људи постављају
- How do I draw a bird that is all black?
- Go genuinely dark and reserve two hard sheen streaks - one along the wing, one on the head. Form in an all-black subject lives entirely in what you leave light.
- How big is a crow's beak?
- Nearly as long as the head, deep and straight like a dagger, with a bristle patch of feathers covering its base. A small neat beak makes it a blackbird.
- What posture does a crow have?
- Upright and deliberate - standing tall, head up, tail level. The hunched sneak belongs to cartoons; real crows carry themselves like they own the ground.
- How do I start drawing a crow?
- With the body egg, always - never the head. The egg sets the size and tilt of everything, and a head drawn first ends up with a body that does not fit it.
- Where do the legs go on a crow?
- Further back than they look - behind the middle of the body egg. What reads as the leg is mostly the foot, and the real joint is up inside the feathers.
- How do I draw the feathers on a crow?
- As groups, never individually. Two or three curved rows on the wing are enough for the eye to fill in hundreds.
- Can a beginner draw a crow?
- Yes. The construction is an egg and a circle, and the species detail arrives late enough that a rough version still reads.
- What size should the head be on a crow?
- Smaller than instinct says - roughly a quarter of the body length. Oversized heads are what make drawn birds look like toys.
