Block in the big square of the house.

It should fill most of your page, with a margin all round.

A house is a square with a triangle on top, and almost everybody can already draw both. That makes it the ideal place to learn something harder without noticing: that straight lines are difficult, and that a drawing lives or dies on whether they meet.

This is the lesson where corners matter. A square whose corners nearly meet looks wrong in a way nobody can name, and fixing that habit here pays off in every man-made object you draw afterwards.

Block in the big square of the house.

Everything else gets measured against this, so draw it in one motion rather than in short careful passes. A slightly lopsided shape drawn confidently is more use than a perfect one built out of twelve nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see a hesitant line.

Drawing it small to leave room for detail. The big shape is most of the drawing - use the space.

It should fill most of your page, with a margin all round.

Put a triangle on top for the roof.

The base of the triangle sits exactly on the top of the square - same width, no overhang yet. Aim for a roof about a third of the total height; that is the proportion that reads as an ordinary house.

Making the roof too shallow, which turns the house into a shed.

The roof should be roughly a third as tall as the wall.

Extend the roof slightly past the walls on both sides.

Real roofs overhang. Two short lines poking out past the corners is a tiny change that immediately makes the house look built rather than diagrammed.

Making the overhang enormous, which reads as a bandstand.

The overhang should be small - about the width of a window frame.

Draw a light guide line across the wall for the windows.

This is the same trick as the eye line on a face: put the ruler down before the features, not after. Windows at different heights are the most common thing that makes a house look rushed, and this one line prevents it entirely.

Skipping the guide and placing each window by eye.

The line should be horizontal and cross the whole wall.

Draw the door, slightly off-centre, sitting on the ground.

Off-centre looks more natural than dead middle and leaves room for a window beside it. The bottom of the door must sit exactly on the bottom of the wall - a door that floats is very noticeable.

Leaving a gap under the door.

The door's bottom edge should be ON the wall's bottom edge.

Add a window on the guide line.

A square with a cross through it is enough. Keep it small relative to the wall - beginners routinely draw windows so large the house looks like a shopfront.

Drawing the window bigger than the door.

The window should be smaller than the door.

Draw the second window to match the first.

Compare it to the one you just drew rather than to your idea of a window: same size, same angle, same distance from the centre. This is the comparison habit that fixes proportion everywhere, and a pair is the easiest place to practise it because the error is obvious once you look for it.

Making the second window smaller - it usually happens because your hand is more cramped on that side.

Both should sit the same distance from the centre line.

Add a chimney on one slope of the roof.

Put it on the slope rather than at the peak, and make its sides vertical even though the roof is sloping. A chimney that leans with the roof is the classic beginner tell.

Drawing the chimney perpendicular to the roof slope.

Both chimney sides should be vertical, like the walls.

Draw a ground line running behind the house.

One horizontal line either side anchors the house to the earth. Without it the building floats, no matter how well you have drawn it - the same reason a cast shadow matters on an apple.

Drawing the ground line touching only the corners.

The line should pass behind the house and out both sides.

Add the door handle and a little smoke.

Detail is suggested, never itemised. A handful of marks in the right places lets the eye fill in the rest, and drawing every one flattens the drawing into texture. Put them where they matter and stop early.

Adding detail evenly all over, which removes the contrast between busy areas and quiet ones.

Step back. You should still read the big shape first, detail second.

Go over the lines you want to keep, and lose the guides.

This is the step that turns a construction drawing into a finished one, and it is the one most people skip. Press harder on the outline and the features; leave the small stuff light. That difference in weight is what makes a drawing look deliberate rather than traced, and it costs thirty seconds.

Going over everything at the same weight, which flattens the drawing back out.

The outline should be clearly darker than the smallest details.

The finished drawing of a house with the construction lines erased

This is a closure lesson wearing a house costume. Corners meeting is the single most visible marker of care in a drawing, and it is entirely mechanical - overshoot rather than aim.

It also introduces the idea that a drawing has a big shape and small shapes, and that the small ones must line up with each other. Windows at different heights are the same error as eyes at different heights, just easier to see.

And it is the first drawing here with straight lines, which are harder than curves and worth practising on purpose. A straight line is drawn from the shoulder in one movement with your eye on the destination rather than on the pencil - exactly the way you would throw a ball. Watching the tip is what produces the wobble.

A pencil and paper is ideal here because you will want to press lightly at first. Do not use a ruler - a slightly wobbly hand-drawn line looks alive, and a ruled one looks like a plan.

If it looks like a plan rather than a drawing, you used a ruler or pressed evenly all the way round. Vary the pressure.

If the corners look scruffy, you are stopping exactly on them. Overshoot slightly and let the lines cross - a crossed corner reads as closed, a gap does not.

Keep the door and windows aligned with each other. Nothing gives away a rushed house like windows at different heights.

Should I use a ruler?
No. A slightly wobbly hand-drawn line looks alive; a ruled one looks like an architectural plan and is much harder to make look good.
My corners look scruffy.
You are stopping exactly on them. Overshoot slightly and let the lines cross - a crossed corner reads as closed, a small gap does not.
How do I make it look 3D?
Add a side wall: a second, narrower face going back at an angle. That is Level 2 territory, and the box lessons there cover it.
Where should the door go?
Slightly off-centre looks more natural than dead middle, and it gives you room for a window beside it.
How big should the roof be?
About a third of the total height. A shallow roof reads as a bungalow and a very steep one as a chalet - both fine, but choose.
My windows are at different heights.
Draw a light horizontal guide line across the wall first and sit both windows on it. It is the same fix as the eye line on a face.
Can I add a garden?
Keep it simple - a ground line and one or two shapes. A busy garden competes with the house for attention.
What should I draw after this?
The book lesson. It is the same corner-meeting skill applied to something with real perspective in it.
