이 그림에 대해

A watermelon is the pumpkin's stripes on the egg's silence: a huge smooth oval whose only feature is its pattern, dark jagged bands that wrap the form. Each stripe is really two wandering edges with dark filled between them - and their wobble is the melon's signature, so a ruler-straight stripe kills it.

Underneath, this is a single shaded mass like the apple; the subject lives in the silhouette and the surface marks.

단계별로

  1. 단계 1

Block the whole shape in as one oval.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

조심해 Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

체크 It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. 단계 2

Break the outline so it is not a perfect oval.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

조심해 Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

체크 The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. 단계 3

    Draw the two axes.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

조심해 Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

체크 The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. 단계 4

Draw the top of the watermelon.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

조심해 Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

체크 The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. 단계 5

    Draw the top hollow.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

조심해 Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

체크 The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. 단계 6

    Choose the light direction.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

조심해 Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

체크 You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. 단계 7

Shade the far side of the form.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

조심해 Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

체크 The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. 단계 8

Leave a thin light line at the outer edge.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

조심해 Running the shading tight to the outline.

체크 A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. 단계 9

    Add the bright spot.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

조심해 A large or doubled highlight.

체크 The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. 단계 10

    Add the identifying surface detail.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

조심해 Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

체크 Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. 단계 11

Draw the shadow on the surface below.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

조심해 An even grey puddle not touching the object.

체크 The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. 단계 12

Firm the outline, rub out the axes.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    조심해 Equal weight everywhere.

체크 Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

이 책이 실제로 가르치는 것은

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The watermelon closes the solid family by combining its whole toolkit on one form: wrapped pattern, controlled edge damage, a smooth value sphere underneath, and scale-by-contrast at the stem. If the family's lessons landed, this one is pure assembly.

필요한 것

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

잘못된 일이 생기면

If the stripes flatten it, they are not wrapping: every band must bow with the body, converging toward the ends exactly as the pumpkin's segments do.

If it reads as a beach ball, the stripe edges are too clean: watermelon bands have ragged, jagged edges - draw each edge as a wandering line with small zigzags.

If the size is not reading, add the tiny curled stem at one end: a big form plus a small feature equals scale, the whale's-eye rule again.

사람들이 묻는 질문

How do I draw watermelon stripes?
As dark bands that bow with the body and converge at the ends, each edge a wandering jagged line. Straight, clean-edged stripes read as a beach ball.
How do I make a watermelon look big?
Contrast: a huge smooth oval against one tiny curled stem. Scale always comes from a small feature on a large form, never from drawing large.
Should I draw a whole watermelon or a slice?
The whole fruit first - it is a form-and-pattern lesson. A slice is a different drawing about wet texture and seeds, and it is harder than it looks.
Can I draw a watermelon on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a watermelon?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a watermelon?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my watermelon look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a watermelon?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a watermelon need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
