Begin with the big shape.

It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

이 그림에 대해

Cherries come in pairs, and the pair is the lesson: two spheres joined by stems meeting at one point, the far one half-hidden behind the near one, each catching the same light. It is the site's smallest composition exercise - two objects that must agree about overlap, light and scale.

Like every simple form on this site, it is one mass plus value: block it in, break the outline where the real thing does, then let light do the rest.

단계별로

  1. 단계 1

    Begin with the big shape.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

조심해 Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

체크 It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. 단계 2

Break the outline so it is not a perfect oval.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

조심해 Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

체크 The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. 단계 3

Put a vertical and a horizontal through the middle.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

조심해 Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

체크 The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. 단계 4

    Add the stalk.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

조심해 Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

체크 The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. 단계 5

    Draw the top hollow.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

조심해 Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

체크 The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. 단계 6

    Decide the light source now.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

조심해 Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

체크 You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. 단계 7

    Put the shadow side in.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

조심해 Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

체크 The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. 단계 8

    Keep the outermost edge light.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

조심해 Running the shading tight to the outline.

체크 A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. 단계 9

    Add the highlight.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

조심해 A large or doubled highlight.

체크 The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. 단계 10

    Draw the cherry texture.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

조심해 Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

체크 Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. 단계 11

Add the shadow it sits in.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

조심해 An even grey puddle not touching the object.

체크 The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. 단계 12

Press harder on the final lines and remove the guides.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    조심해 Equal weight everywhere.

체크 Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

이 책이 실제로 가르치는 것은

What transfers is the standard light kit - core shadow inside the edge, bounced light at it, one small highlight, a cast shadow that anchors. Every shaded form you ever draw uses all four.

The cherry pair is composition at its minimum size: overlap, shared light and size-by-distance on two identical objects. Every still-life you ever attempt is this drawing with more members.

필요한 것

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

잘못된 일이 생기면

If they float apart, the stems are wrong: both stems spring from a SINGLE point at the top, forking down to their fruits like a wishbone.

If the pair looks flat, nothing overlaps: the near cherry must cut across the far one, and the far one darkens where it tucks behind.

If they read as one lumpy mass, the sizes match too well: make the near cherry visibly larger - nearness and size agreeing is what separates them.

사람들이 묻는 질문

How do I draw a pair of cherries?
Two spheres, the near one larger and overlapping the far one, with both stems springing from a single point above like a wishbone. The shared stem point is what joins them.
Why do my two cherries look like one blob?
Same size, no overlap. Enlarge the near one, let it cut across the far one, and darken the far cherry where it tucks behind.
How shiny should a cherry be?
The shiniest thing in the food set: one small hard white highlight per cherry, same corner on both. It is the one fruit where a crisp highlight is correct.
Can I draw a cherry on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a cherry?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a cherry?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my cherry look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a cherry?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a cherry need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
