A saguaro cactus is a green cylinder with its arms up, and it is on this site for its ribs: the vertical lines running the column's length are contour lines exactly like the pumpkin's segments turned on end, and each arm bends through a perfect elbow - out, then up - that beginners round off into a curve and lose.

The build is the standard solid one - one oval, a corrected silhouette, then shading with a committed light direction.

ステップバイステップ

  1. ステップ 1

Lay in one shape, drawn in a single motion.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

気をつけろ Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

チェック It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. ステップ 2

Push the outline in and out.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

気をつけろ Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

チェック The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. ステップ 3

Add the two centre lines lightly.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

気をつけろ Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

チェック The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. ステップ 4

    Draw the top feature.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

気をつけろ Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

チェック The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. ステップ 5

    Put the top curve in.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

気をつけろ Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

チェック The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. ステップ 6

    Decide the light source now.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

気をつけろ Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

チェック You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. ステップ 7

Shade the far side of the form.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

気をつけろ Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

チェック The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. ステップ 8

Leave a light strip at the shadow edge.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

気をつけろ Running the shading tight to the outline.

チェック A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. ステップ 9

Put one small highlight on the lit side.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

気をつけろ A large or doubled highlight.

チェック The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. ステップ 10

    Add the identifying surface detail.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

気をつけろ Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

チェック Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. ステップ 11

Draw the shadow on the surface below.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

気をつけろ An even grey puddle not touching the object.

チェック The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. ステップ 12

Weight the outline and lose the construction.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    気をつけろ Equal weight everywhere.

チェック Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

これが教えてくれるのは

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The cactus is the cylinder's contour lesson grown vertical: rib spacing doing on a standing column what the pumpkin's segments did on a squashed sphere. Same rule, rotated ninety degrees - which is how you know it is a rule.

必要なもの

Anything that makes a mark. On paper, press lightly for the first few steps - most of what you draw early is scaffolding you will erase.

もし間違ってたら

If the arms look like bananas, the elbow is missing: a saguaro arm goes OUT horizontally then turns UP through a near-right angle - two moves, not one curve.

If the ribs flatten it, they are evenly spaced: ribs crowd together at the column's edges and spread in the middle, which is what makes the cylinder turn.

If the spines read as fur, there are too many: a few short ticks along the ribs, in pairs, sparser than feels thorough.

質問

How do I draw cactus arms?
Out horizontally, then up through a near-right angle elbow - two distinct moves. Rounding the elbow into one curve turns the arm into a banana.
How do I draw the ribs on a cactus?
As vertical contour lines, crowded at the edges of the column and spread in the middle. The uneven spacing is what makes the cylinder read as round.
How many spines should I draw on a cactus?
Far fewer than the plant has: short paired ticks along the ribs, sparser than feels thorough. Dense spines read as fur and soften the whole form.
Can I draw a cactus on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a cactus?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a cactus?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my cactus look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a cactus?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a cactus need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
