Draw one oval and nothing else yet.

It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

이 그림에 대해

A skull is a sphere wearing a box: the cranium is one big ball, the face is a narrower box hung on its front, and every landmark - sockets, nose, teeth - lives on the box, not the ball. Beginners draw one egg and float features on it; the two-part build is the whole trick.

The build is the standard solid one - one oval, a corrected silhouette, then shading with a committed light direction.

단계별로

  1. 단계 1

Draw one oval and nothing else yet.

One shape, one motion. A slightly lopsided mass drawn confidently beats a perfect one assembled from nervous strokes, because you can correct a shape and you cannot un-see hesitation.

조심해 Building the mass from many small safe strokes.

체크 It should fill most of the page with a margin all round.

  2. 단계 2

Break the outline so it is not a perfect oval.

Nothing organic is a perfect oval. Push the outline in and out where the subject actually does - the asymmetry IS the likeness.

조심해 Leaving the construction oval as the finished outline.

체크 The outline should differ visibly from the oval underneath.

  3. 단계 3

Mark the centre with two light lines.

Two light lines through the middle are the rulers for everything that follows. Without them the features drift off-centre a few millimetres at a time.

조심해 Skipping the axes because the shape looks simple.

체크 The two lines should cross near the middle of the mass.

  4. 단계 4

Draw the top of the skull.

Whatever sits on top attaches INTO the form, not onto its outline - it comes out of a dip or a mound, and drawing that junction is what attaches it.

조심해 Balancing the stalk on the outline like a hat.

체크 The top feature should overlap the mass's outline.

  5. 단계 5

Draw the dip or curve at the top.

The hollow around the top is what makes the form read as having a top rather than an edge. One curve, and note which way it bows - it tells the viewer where their eye is.

조심해 Omitting the dip so the top sits on a flat line.

체크 The dip should curve, not sit flat.

  6. 단계 6

Decide where the light is and mark it.

Pick a direction and commit. Every decision from here - shading, highlight, cast shadow - follows from this one, and changing your mind halfway is the classic way a drawing ends up lit from two directions.

조심해 Deferring the decision and shading by instinct.

체크 You should be able to point at the light source.

  7. 단계 7

Shade the far side of the form.

Work in one direction and build darkness in passes. Scrubbing back and forth gives an even grey - precisely the thing that makes a drawing look flat.

조심해 Scrubbing, and stopping two steps short of dark enough.

체크 The dark side should be clearly darker than the mid tone.

  8. 단계 8

    Keep the outermost edge light.

Leave a thin lighter strip right at the shadow-side edge - bounced light from the surface below. It is the single cheapest thing that makes a form read as round.

조심해 Running the shading tight to the outline.

체크 A lighter line should separate shading from edge.

  9. 단계 9

Put one small highlight on the lit side.

One highlight, small, off-centre on the lit side. Two symmetrical highlights read as plastic; a big one reads as wet.

조심해 A large or doubled highlight.

체크 The highlight should be smaller than your thumbnail.

  10. 단계 10

    Draw the skull surface.

Surface marks follow the form - they curve over the mass and fade near the highlight. Flat marks cancel the volume you just shaded into it.

조심해 Marks drawn flat across the curved surface.

체크 Marks should bend with the surface.

  11. 단계 11

    Draw the shadow underneath.

Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away from the light. It anchors the object; without it everything you shaded still floats.

조심해 An even grey puddle not touching the object.

체크 The shadow should touch the object's base.

  12. 단계 12

Weight the outline and lose the construction.

Weight the silhouette, erase the axes and the oval, and leave the interior marks light. The weight difference is what makes it look deliberate.

    조심해 Equal weight everywhere.

체크 Outline darkest, marks lightest, guides gone.

The finished drawing of a skull with the construction lines erased

The skill underneath is committing to a light direction before shading anything. Most flat-looking drawings are lit from nowhere in particular, and deciding is the fix.

The skull teaches the armature under every face you will ever draw: where the eyes actually sit (in the sockets, not on the surface), why cheekbones catch light, why the jaw hinges where it does. It is the face lesson's answer key.

필요한 것

A pencil and any paper, or a finger on the canvas above - nothing here needs special equipment. Keep the construction light if you are on paper, because the guides come off at the end.

잘못된 일이 생기면

If it looks like a cartoon, the eye sockets are round. Real sockets are angled rounded squares, tilted toward the nose, set wider apart than feels right.

If the jaw is wrong, it is as wide as the cranium. The face-box is clearly narrower than the ball above it - the step-in at the temples must survive into your outline.

If it will not sit in space, the centre lines are missing: a vertical through the nasal opening, a horizontal through the sockets. Every feature measures off that cross.

사람들이 묻는 질문

How do I start a skull drawing?
Ball first, then box: one large circle for the cranium, then a narrower box hung on its lower front for the face, with a centre-line cross over both. Sockets, nose and teeth all attach to the box - nothing floats on the ball.
What shape are the eye sockets really?
Angled rounded rectangles, tilted so their inner lower corners point toward the nasal opening - and larger and wider-set than intuition says. Round sockets are the single biggest cartoon tell.
Do I draw every tooth?
Suggest, do not inventory: one line for the bite, four or five light verticals fading toward the edges. Fully outlined teeth read as piano keys and pull the eye from the sockets, which are the drawing's real subject.
Can I draw a skull on paper instead of the canvas?
Yes, and for a shading lesson paper is arguably better - a soft pencil gives you more range than a finger on glass. The printable sheet has every step, and a photographed result is measured the same way.
How do I start drawing a skull?
One oval, drawn in a single motion, then correct the silhouette where the real thing differs. The oval is scaffolding, not the outline.
How do I shade a skull?
Pick a light direction and commit, shade in one direction in passes, keep the darkest band just inside the edge, and leave one small off-centre highlight.
Why does my skull look flat?
Almost certainly range - no true dark anywhere and no untouched light left on the page. Go two steps darker than feels safe and leave the highlight alone.
Can a beginner draw a skull?
Yes - it is deliberately one of the simpler forms here, chosen so the shading can be the whole lesson.
Does a skull need a cast shadow?
Yes, always. Without one the form floats on the page however carefully you shaded it. Darkest at the contact point, softer as it stretches away.
